Babuska Wins Four for Four/Grease Monkey Takes The Lead

CCS MidAtlantic and Southeast Championships with ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire Featuring AMA Road Race Grand Championships

Virginia International Raceway, Alton, VA

September 19-20, 2015

Erich Helmbach’s team, Grease Monkey Racing won the ASRA Team Challenge Series Presented by Michelin Tire GTO class and Overall, putting him ahead in points for the final round at Daytona next month. Helmbach nabbed the holeshot and led the rest of the grid into turn one at the start of the 69 lap race, and never looked back. Teammate Scott Harwell helped Helmbach maintain the lead on Grease Monkey Racing’s BMW S1000RR, they would not relinquish the entire 69 laps and brought the team to victory taking the checkered flag with less than ten minutes remaining in the event’s two hour time limit.

Team Jinba Ittai was the only other team to complete the entire 69 laps, taking second place overall, and first in the GTU class on their Yamaha YZF-R6. Jinba Ittai moved into second place overall after 22 laps when Team Mavros suffered a transmission failure on their Ducati 1000SS, knocking them out of the race and out of the points lead in the GT Lights class. From then on, the top three overall teams held their positions with Team LWT Racer 61 finishing third overall, after completing 68 laps on their Suzuki SV 656, and into the points lead for GT Lights.

Frank Babuska, Jr. ran undefeated, winning four for four. He won the Championship Cup Series Unlimited Grand Prix race on Sunday morning after it was rescheduled after an oil spill during the first lap of the race on Saturday that shut down the event for track clean up. Babuska nailed the holeshot on his Suzuki GSX-R1000, as he did in all his races, opened a gap on the rest of the field, and led all seven laps of the race without challenge. Behind him, James Shepherd was holding a strong second place on his Yamaha YZF-R1, and by lap three, he had started to stretch his lead over the battle for third behind him. Babuska took his fourth and final victory of the weekend with Shepherd finishing second, and Christian Crosslin third on his TOBC Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000. Babuska also won the Unlimited Superbike, Unlimited Supersport, and GTO classes. Shepherd won the AMA Supersport 1000 race, and Crosslin won the AMA Superbike 1000 race.

Brian Kcraget also won four for four, dominating the Lightweight classes on his TOBC Racing Suzuki SV 650. Kcraget won the Lightweight Superbike, Lightweight Supersport, Lightweight Formula 40, and AMA Supersport Lightweight Twins classes.

Going four for four as well, Xavier Zayat won the GTU, Middleweight Supersport, AMA Moto 2, and AMA Supersport 600 classes. And, took home top honors in the AMA Road Race Grand Championships after being presented with the AMA Road Race Horizon Award. Zayat secured class championships in several regions, including Middleweight Supersport and GTU in the CCS Atlantic Region, Middleweight Supersport in the CCS MidAtlantic Region, and Middleweight Supersport and GTU in the Southeast region, and 2015 AMA National Championships in the 600 Supersport and Moto 2 classes.

Zayat said he was thankful for all the support he received throughout the season from Mike Faillace of MDM, James Bock and PirelliTires/Podium Motorsports, Chris Maher of Maher Motorsports “for solid engines,” Shoei Helmets, Michael Braxton of Impact Armor, and Todd McNabney of Heroic Leathers, and a “special mention” to Jimmy Fotinopoulos for all the weekend hospitality.

Amateur racer Vasiliy Zhulin was the winningest racer of the weekend with five victories. He won the Amateur Unlimited Grand Prix, Rookie’s Cup GTO, Unlimited Supersport, AMA Supersport 1000, and AMA Superbike1000 races.

The 32nd annual Championship Cup Series Race of Champions is scheduled for October 15th-18th, at Daytona International Speedway, and will include AHRMA racing events as well as the final events for the AMA Sanctioned ASRA Sprint Series presented by Pirelli Tire, and the ASRA Team Challenge presented by Michelin Tire.
