McFadden, Babuska and Wilson Victorious In ASRA Competition at Summit Point
Summit Point, WV– The AMA sanctioned ASRA Sprint Series presented by Pirelli Tire came to Summit Point Motorsports Park for the traditional Memorial Day Celebration and the crowd was out in force. With the Championship Cup Series and USGPRU in attendance, 206 riders accounted for 986 class entries for the 3 day event, making it the largest participant event at Summit Point since May of 2006.
Rolling out on to the track after the lunch break were the ASRA SportBikes. With a field of 33 bikes thing got busy fast on the Summit Point Circuit. From the start, veteran ASRA competitor David Rose put his Yamaha R6 out front and led the breakaway pack of four into their own battle for the win. Joining Rose out front was Xavier Zayat, Justin Holderman, Nick McFadden and Craig Miller. While the top four shuffled positions for the first seven laps, things changed dramatically as Zayat and Holderman had mechanical problems that put them out of the race on that lap. For the final two circuits, McFadden on his Suzuki GSX-R600 held on to the lead over Rose and finished 1.5 seconds ahead for the victory. Rose finished second and Craig Miller came home in a solid third position on his Yamaha R6.
The ASRA SuperStock bikes were up next, and all eyes were on Tim Bemisderfer, the defending SuperStock Champion, on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 since he secured the pole by 0.6 second over Frankie Babuska, Jr. during Saturday’s qualifying. Well there is a reason they run the race, because Babuska on his GSX-R1000 was not going to go quietly into the night. From the start, Babuska jumped in front of Bemisderfer and the two slowly moved clear of Tony Leong and David Loikits, who had their own epic struggle for third place in the class. By lap four, Bemisderfer tried to flex his Summit Point magic and passed Babuska to take the point, only to have the lead retaken a lap later. No matter what Bemisderfer threw at him, Babuska kept his composure and squeaked out his first ASRA SuperStock race by 0.100 second over Bemisderfer. The battle for the final podium sport went to Loikits by 0.113 second over Leong, giving Suzuki a GSX-R sweep of the top three.
When the ThunderBike race started, no one was surprised that Art Diaz on his Buell jumped out front until he lost it going into Turn 10 and impacted the Airfence. Stephen Hoffman on his Suzuki SV650 got off track on the exit of the turn causing the race to be stopped while both riders were evaluated. Unfortunately for both riders, their races were done with bikes too damaged to continue. The restart pitted Bart DeFrancesco against Tommy Wilson on their SV650’s and for the final four laps neither rider could gain a definite advantage. The side-by-side run to the checkered flag brought a hard-earned victory for Wilson by 0.70 second over DeFrancesco in the closest ASRA finish of the weekend. Brian McGlade held off Adrian Hackett to take third and give Suzuki another sweep of the podium with the top 5 riders aboard SV650’s.
In Amateur ASRA action, the stage was set on Sunday when all three classes saw record qualifying times. For ThunderBike, Adam Carton, from Glenwood, MD, put down a 1:24.634 with his Suzuki SV650 to take the pole. Then the SportBike record went to Darroch Malone, from Chambersburg, PA, on his Yamaha R6 at 1:18.668, lowering the old record by 0.062 second. The quickest lap for the Amateurs in qualifying belonged to Stanislav Tambovtsev on his SuperStock Kawasaki ZX600, his 1:17.273 was good enough to lower the record by 2.416 seconds from the previous mark.
The Amateur race winners were Adam Carton riding a Suzuki SV650 in ThunderBike, Marin Gjojdeshi rode his Suzuki GSX-R600 to victory in Sportbike, and Vasiliy Zhulin took the SuperStock win on his Honda 1000.
