Tray Batey, Chad Herrmann, Dane Westby, Lee Acree and Ben Thompson each won a race at the annual Suzuki Cup Finals, held in conjunction with the WERA Grand National Finals, Sunday at Road Atlanta. Vesrah Suzuki’s Batey, a multi-time SV1000 Cup Champion, pulled his usual disappearing act in the SV1000 event, winning the eight-lap race by nearly nine seconds over Suzuki of Dublin’s Jeff Walker and MSP Cycles’ Ricky Ford. Lucky 7 Racing’s 17-year-old Chad Herrmann then defeated Batey’s teammate Lee Acree and Butler Machinery’s Robert Jensen to win the GSX-R600 Cup final by 0.159 second. T. Westby Corporation’s 20-year-old Dane Westby beat Ghetto Customs’ Chris Parrish to the line by 0.219 second to win his second consecutive SV650 Cup Championship. Acree came out on top of a 10-lap duel with Jensen to win the GSX-R750 Cup Final by 0.121 second. The GSX-R1000 Cup Final was stopped twice by red flags, once when Tim Bemisderfer highsided and landed in the track at Turn Seven and once when Lloyd Bayley tucked the front at over 150 mph in Turn Nine, the kink at the end of the back straightaway. Bemisderfer and Bayley both walked away from their crashes, but due to time constraints the race was called complete after the second, five-lap portion of the race. Batey had led all four laps by a slim yet stable margin over Millennium KWS Suzuki’s Ben Thompson, but in post-race checks on the official dynamometer, Batey’s GSX-R1000 was found to be 0.3 horsepower over the maximum limit. Batey was docked three positions to fourth, and Thompson was named the GSX-R1000 Cup Champion over Jensen and Cyclespace.com’s Keith Marshall. Batey has appealed the decision. According to Vesrah Suzuki team owner Mark Junge, the same procedure was not used to make pre-race dyno runs and post-race dyno runs, and the change in procedure affected the dyno reading for Batey’s GSX-R1000, which Junge said had dynoed at 3.0 horsepower under the limit before the race. 2007 Suzuki Cup Finals Road Atlanta Braselton, Georgia October 14, 2007 Provisional Race Results (listed in chronological order): SV1000: 1.
