On Thursday February 16, Roadracingworld.com published a story sourced from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) website. ~https://www.roadracingworld.com/news/article/?article=25036~ Our story re-published the BBC’s quote of 2005 FIA Formula One Champion Fernando Alonso, who was evidently asked for his opinion of the driving ability of MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi, who drove at a multi-team F1 test at Valencia that included Alonso. “Until we see him race we won’t know his true potential, but it will be very difficult for him,” Alonso was quoted as saying in the February 16 BBC report. “He might finish fifth or even get on the podium some time, but I could do the same on the bikes if I was given a bit of time to practice.” Roadracingworld.com provided a link to the original story on the BBC website. ~http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/motorsport/formula_one/4722304.stm~ On February 18, however, that link brings up a similar story on the BBC website. We say “similar” because Alonso’s quote, which fueled many discussions on Internet forums over the last two days, has been changed. BBC has made no note in the current story that the quote has been changed from the original. The quote now reads: “Until we see him race we won’t know his true potential, but it will be very difficult for him,” he said. “He can do well, because he will be driving a Ferrari, and can finish in the top five. But, from that to winning a Championship or races you need more. “I could start riding a motorbike and, after three years training, be a second from them, but I don’t pretend that I could beat Dani (Pedrosa) or someone who has been in motorbikes since they were three years old.”
