Summit Point, WV May 30, 2011 Near record heat and track temps of 135°F greeted riders for Round 3 of the Michelin Pro Series sanctioned by ASRA. Sam Gaige sat on the SportBike pole with the Rider’s Discount Yamaha R6. Next to Gaige were 2010 Champion and Mar Del Auto R6 rider Mark Miller, Bliss Machine’s R6 with Scotty Ryan and Duc Pond 848 rider Ryan Jones. Gaige established his lead on lap one with Dan Ortega moving his MD Racing R6 up from the outside of row two for the second slot with Miller third. By lap four there was a shuffle as Cassidy Heiser was laying down some hot laps to move from his fourth row starting position into second place behind Gaige. Heiser improved on laps four and five and set the fastest pace of the race at 1.14:791 on lap six. On lap seven the order was Gaige from Heiser, Jones and Miller. The order repeated as the field passed the white flag, but as the leaders came to the checkered flag it was Heiser with a strong drive out of turn ten taking the win. When the bikes rolled up to the podium it was discovered that Gaige’s R6 had a broken steering damper mount that was wedging between frame and forks inhibiting steering input to the bike and no doubt allowing Heiser to narrow the gap to Gaige more quickly in the closing laps. Ryan Jones brought his Ducati 848 home third. Heiser, Gaige and Jones shared special support this weekend as a group of Mid-Atlantic motorcycle shops and racing suppliers showed their continued support in a big way by ponying up an additional $750 above the class award money for the top three spots in ASRA’s Michelin Pro SportBike Expert class. The riders expressed thanks to this weekend’s class sponsors Jason Levitt of Full Spectrum Power, maker of lightweight, powerful motorcycle batteries; Mark Rozema of Markbilt, builder and tuner of racing motors and bikes; and Donnie Unger of Duc Pond Motorsports, a major Ducati dealer and race tuner in the Mid-Atlantic region. “ASRA thanks these suppliers for their unwavering and enthusiastic support for CCS/ASRA in our efforts to keep bringing the best amateur racing in the United States back to riders year after year,” said CCS/ASRA Operations Director Kevin Elliott. Learn more about these great sponsors at: www.fullspectrumpower.com www.markbiltracebikes.com www.ducpond.com In Michelin Pro SuperStock Tim Bemisderfer took his Vesrah Suzuki from Pole to victory. David Loikits got out front early, but a rear tire that was a little over pressure and a lot of additional pressure from Bemisderfer meant that within a lap Loikits would relinquish the lead. Loikits held onto second with his Pirelli shod Suzuki 1000 and Matt Delorenzo scored the third spot on the podium aboard another Suzuki. Bemisderfer credited the victory to the support from Vesrah, Twigg Cycles, Dunlop, CTR Suspension and Washington Cycles Works. Loikits thanked Rich Cronrath and all the guys at Pirelli along with Jason Levitt at Full Spectrum power, Beth and his crew for their support for this podium finish. In Michelin Pro ThunderBike the front row told the whole story as Ducati 1000 riders Joey Thomas and Peter Meringolo lined up with Honda rider Ray Hofman and Art Diaz aboard his Buell. Thomas led the first lap and looked to give local favorite Diaz a run. But by lap two Diaz was out front with Hoffman third and Dustin Watson fourth. Diaz continued to pull out a few lengths per lap of the nine-lap sprint. But by lap five Hoffman was by Thomas and pressing on to take Diaz. And although Hoffman closed to within a few lengths by race in Diaz held on for the win. Amateur ThunderBike provided more of a show as Ducati rider David Hanig of Ossining, NY and David Souders of Chatham, NJ went at all race long. Hanig led the first two laps with Souders pushing his Suzuki SV650 ahead on lap three. The two were nose to tail for three laps and when they came by the flag stand on lap six Hanig was back in the lead. Hanig would hold on for the win with Souders a close second.
