Summit Point Cyclefest – Summit Point, WV – May 28, 2012

Another blazing day here at Summit Point Raceway as the main races for the Summit Point Cyclefest got underway with a fairly large field of competitors assembling for this combined CCS and Michelin PRO Series event. A total of 853 entries were filed for the Summit point Cyclefest.

Michelin PRO Sportbike The Michelin PRO Sportbike race turned into a walk for Mark Miller Jr. as everything was clicking for the Livengood R6 rider. Cassidy Heiser who qualified on the pole might have caused Miller to lose a little sleep wondering whether he had the goods to take Heiser. Heiser got a poor start and although he was close in the opening laps, Miller opened 4 second gap over Heiser’s Action Motorsports R6 by race end. Ryan Manotti’s GSXR 600 was third.

USGPRU Moto3 In Moto3 a jump start by Casey Tobolewski provided a good battle for fans, but put an end to Tobolewski’s designs on a podium spot. It was Palmer Kling who was the class of the field in Moto3 finishing on the top step. Kling said, “It was a battle to the end between me and Casey.” Both competitors were clearly affected by the heat during the race. Alex Wisdom finished second to Kling. Wisdom commented,”I saw Stu (Aitken-Cade) pulling away halfway through the race, but I thought if I keep pushing maybe I could catch him. Anthony started to catch me near the end and actually passed me, but I was able to get under him coming onto the front straight. ” Wisdom bested Aitken-Cade and Mazziotto for the second step. Aitken-Cade was third.

Michelin PRO Thunderbike Pro Thunderbike was expected to be a pretty good race with Ray Hofman’s Indy Ducati and Walt Sipp’s Bison Racing Buell right at the front of the grid. But with Hofman coming to the scale after Saturday qualifying a few gallons too light to make minimum weight, the complexion of the race completely changed as he was relegated to the back for the start. Instead of a duel, fans waited to see how long it would take Ray Hofman to make his way to the front from last on the grid and give Sipp a fight.

Sipp led from the fall of the green flag knowing Hofman was coming and could make up four-tenths a lap on him based on qualifying times. Hofman said, “It was definitely a disadvantage starting from the back. It was exciting. I had a carrot in front of me trying to chase down Walt. He was putting down some good laps. On the last lap I was able to catch up to him into turn one. I thought if I could out-brake him…but it didn’t work. The last lap we were fighting every turn. And I just couldn’t get by him. He had a good race.” Alex Shaw on a Suzuki 650 was third after tussling with local hot shoe Art Diaz, who unfortunately crashed in turn one.

Michelin PRO Superstock Cassidy Heiser qualified the Battley Cycles R6 in the Superstock class and started from second on the grid to pole-sitter and 2011 Superstock Champion Tim Bemisderfer aboard his Vesrah Suzuki. John Palmer and Lloyd Bayley rounded out the front row of the grid, both on GSXR 1000’s. By the end of lap one the show was on as Bemisderfer and Palmer pulled away from the pack and were quickly joined by Dave Loikits and Eric Helmbach at the front. It was a great spectacle for fans as Suzuki rider Dave Loikits led early before relinquishing the lead to ultimate winner Bemisderfer. Eric Helmbach’s Chester Auto Repair BMW was right in the fray coming a well deserved second after getting by Loikits on the final lap. Palmer was fourth and Arnie Hastings was fifth on a GSXR 750.

Said Loikits, “I got a good start. Tim and I were going at it for a little bit. I didn’t realize Eric was so close.” Helmbach from the podium, “I had a blast out there. I didn’t think I’d be running with these guys feeling the way I did this weekend, but it worked out pretty good. Bemisderfer also commented, “It was a good race at the beginning you know. I knew halfway was coming and I just didn’t want to be stuck back there if we got a red flag, so I figured I’d try to get past these guys, put some laps down and get away from them. These little guys, and that BMW are fast down the straight.”
