Benny Solis Stars In CVMA Action At Chuckwalla

Benny Solis Stars In CVMA Action At Chuckwalla

As the winter storms spread heavy rain and wind throughout the country, the heavens have shown light down on Southern California’s Chuckwalla Valley Raceway and have brought some fantastic racing. January 21-22, 2017, round 4 of the Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association drew in some pro teams and riders for off-season training as well as many of the local racers. CVMA provides very competitive and fun racing for everyone.

Benny Solis hopped back onboard of his H35 Honda CBR600RR this past weekend and took the win both days in Formula Middleweight. In Saturday’s race, MotoStation’s Kory Cowan took second place with Jody Barry following him. The 18-year old from Illinois took second place on his Rhoades Racing/Farrell Performance Kawasaki ZX-6R during Sunday’s Formula Middleweight race. Solis kept his momentum and went on to win both of the weekend’s SuperSport Middleweight races. Barry followed up clinching second place finishes in both races.

Meanwhile superbike rider Oleg Pianykh came out swinging onboard of his Yamaha YZF-R1. The 30-year-old is currently the four-time Utah Sport Bike Association number one plate holder as well as a competitor in MotoAmerica. Pianykh took the win in his races on Saturday while showing tremendous speed and momentum. But in the TrackDaz / SoCal TrackDay CVMA Shootout race, Pianykh soon found out that he would have to battle with Solis for the win. At the start, Pianykh got the early lead and led for a few laps before making some mistakes which Solis was able to capitalize on. An accident brought out a red flag and a four-lap race restart. Pianykh took advantage of the restart and led most of the four laps. It came down to the wire but Solis was able to put an outside pass on Pianykh in turns 12-13 on the last lap and take the victory.

“It was close but really great racing,” explained Pianykh.

Solis, on the other hand had the disadvantage.

“It was fun! Challenging for sure on a 600 since I didn’t have the 1000 power but I think I prefer it that way since it made me really push,” said Solis.

In the lightweight class, a new face emerged. Reno’s Bradley Champion came out for his first time with CVMA and quickly showed his speed. Champion took first in all of his races carrying lots of momentum throughout the weekend. In the Lightweight Shootout, Pitman Wallace took the early lead but was overtaken soon by Champion who went on to win the race and throw down a lap time of 1:55.973.

Champion, a current AFM racer, said that “It was nice to see that many bikes on the grids in both organizations. CVMA was all around a great experience and a fun time.”

In CVMA’s women’s-only class, FemmeWalla, Caroline Olsen took a CBR1000RR out for this weekend’s races and picked up speed quickly. Olsen took the win in Saturday’s race running a 1:52.248, followed by Colorado’s Wyeth Jackson on her Kawasaki ZX-6R and Elaine Carpenter on her Yamaha YZF-R6. Olsen was unable to compete in Sunday’s race due to a crash with another rider in Turn 16 in Sunday’s Formula Open race. Elaine went on to take the win on Sunday’s race.

In the small bike class, we saw the return of Gray Pham on his KTM RC390 following an injury from round two. Pham stepped up to the plate and took the win in both of Saturday’s 350 SuperSport and Ultra Lightweight Shootout races following tight battles with Josh Fogle on his Kawasaki Ninja 250. Ruben Casarez rounded out the top three in both races on Saturday on his KTM RC390. Pham continued with his momentum into Sunday’s races, taking the wins in the KTM Masters class and 350 SuperSport. In Sunday’s Ultra Lightweight Shootout, there was a tight battle for the win, resulting in Mark Fitzsimmons edging out Pham for the win, who battled hard with the newcomer from El Salvador Kevin Ochoa for second place.

“CVMA has a lot of good riders” said Ochoa. “In El Salvador we have a good level of riders but there are fewer riders my age… So we came here because there are riders with similar ages”.

If you’re tired of winter track withdrawals, then head out to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway for round 5 of CVMA on February 25-26.

CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.

Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete. Log on to www.cvmaracing.com for more information.
