Yamaha lit the 1000cc sportbike category up when it introduced the new-from-the-ground-up, track-focused YZF-R1 and YZF-R1M in 2015, two versions of a ground-breaking motorcycle. The look resembled the Yamaha YZR-M1, the redesigned cross-plane-crankshaft, inline-four-cylinder engine put out a claimed 180 horsepower and the electronics suite – which was anchored by a 6-axis IMU – was the best on the market, and made the Yamahas the most user-friendly 1000s at the time.

Yamaha was also the first company to emphasize the use and benefit of IMU-based rider aid strategies on a production motorcycle, which forced the rest of the OEMs in the space to develop their own IMU platform to compete in the category.

Bottom line: Yamaha built a weapon of a motorcycle and told its story the best. And the rest had to follow suit …

Yamaha’s YZF-R1 has been on the podium in 92 of the 94 MotoAmerica Superbike races since 2015. The bike has won 59 percent of the Superbike races held, and took the Championship in four years since. Now Yamaha has taken the lessons from the racetrack and refined its 2020 YZF-R1 and track-oriented YZF-R1M.
