ASRA Pro Series Summit Point Cyclefest Summit Point, WV May 26, 2008 After Saturday’s record setting performances, everyone was sure that the ASRA Pro Series Finals would bring more of the same, but that was not the case. Facing 87 degree temperatures and 20 mph winds, the riders just couldn’t get the grip they needed to get the job done. After a beautiful opening ceremony honoring our veterans, Jeff Wood, Robert Jensen and Tim Bemisderfer took to the track for ASRA Pro SuperStock on their Suzuki 1000’s, looking to start their day right with a victory. With the green flag all three were off like they were shot out of a cannon and headed for turn one. The three battled around until they reached turn 5, where Wood on the Bettencourt Suzuki tucked the front end and was dumped unceremoniously on his behind. Jensen and Bemisderfer hooked up nose-to-tail and pulled away from eventual third place David Loikits on the Loikits Industries Suzuki, so it was truly a two man race to the checkered flag. Jensen, on the Butler Machine Suzuki, held off Bemisderfer and the Atwell Racing Suzuki, by .745 seconds while setting a class lap record of 1:12.370 on the final lap of the contest. Wood was able to re-mount his downed machine and moved all the way back up to tenth on the track, ninth in the results after the fourth place machine of Jim Wirth tested over horsepower and was removed for the results.. First victory to Jensen, two more races to go. The ASRA Pro SuperBike field was light on numbers but heavy in talent as Wood and Jensen took to the track for their second face-off of the day. Just as they did in the SuperStock event, Wood and Jensen left the line with the throttle pinned and the race was on. This time, things were different as Wood on the Bettencourt Yamaha kept it on two wheels behind Jensen, shadowing his every move for the first 6 laps. On lap seven, opportunity presented itself and Wood flew past the Butler Machine rider through turns 1 and 2 to take over the top spot. While Jensen struggled to get back to the point, Wood held off the fellow Yamaha rider and took the checkered flag by .048 seconds. David Rose came home a distant third, 11.720 seconds behind the streaking duo. After victory lane, Jensen failed to report to post race inspection, and was removed from the standings, This moved Rose on the Castles and Cottages Yamaha to second and Jonathan Lawrence from Whiting NJ to third place. Next up was the booming sound of power from the ASRA Pro ThunderBike’s as defending champion Dave Estok made his way to Summit Point after racing in the Canadian Thunder Series on Sunday, Without qualifying on Sunday, Estok on the Deely H-D Buell found himself 5 rows behind pole sitter Bryan Bemisderfer with just 20 miles to make up the deficit. It didn’t take that long as Estok holeshot the field and lead from lap one to lap three where Nate Kern pushed his way passed to the lead. For the next several laps, Buell riders Dan Bilansky, Bryan Bemisderfer and Dave Estok took turns pushing the leading BMW but Kern was able to hang onto the point past the white flag. As Bilansky and Kern exited the final turn towards the flag, Kern tried a multiple weaving maneuver but carried it too far and he was judged to have blocked Bilansky. Kern’s penalty moved him from first to third behind Bilansky and Estok and one position ahead of point leader Walt Sipp. The final event of the afternoon was Factory Pro SportBike, and once again it was the Jensen and Wood show as they demonstrated their ability on the 600cc machinery. In a carbon copy of the earlier evens, the Yamaha mounted duo blasted away from the start and settled into their own fight for the lead. Jensen made the same move as in SuperBike, putting himself up front for the first 6 laps and then Wood made his move on lap 7 to take the lead away and hold off the advances of the challenger. Wood set fast lap and class record during the run of 1:13.597, over a second quicker than the previous record.
