Blevins Wins Four at Hallett with CMRA

Conner Blevins won four races and grabbed an additional podium during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) eighth round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, September 18, on the 1.8-mile counter-clockwise course at Hallett Motor Racing Circuit in Hallett, Oklahoma.

A second day of green track conditions from rain the previous night, partially cloudy weather giving way to sunny skies, and temperatures creeping into the low 90’s with soupy humidity made for good lap times. Blevins took his Kawasaki ZX-6R to the top of the box in M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, B Superstock Expert, B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert, and a second in South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert. Blevins also ran the fastest lap of the day, turning a 1:15.214 on Lap 6 of the Formula 1 Expert race.

Daniel Adams once again was the standout for the Lightweights, riding his Suzuki SV650 to four wins in: D Superstock Expert, Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, and Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert, and Lightweight Twins Expert. Adams turned a fastest of lap of 1:20.516 on Lap 6 of Race 9 – Formula 2 Expert.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was exciting, with lap times in the mid-teens, and a great battle shaping up between points leader Brandon Cleland on his RES-prepped Yamaha YZF-R6 and Kawasaki ZX-6R mounted Conner Blevins. Cleland edged Blevins for pole position, turning a 1:16.244, with Brandon Young aboard his Suzuki GSX-R1000 rounding out the front row.

The 17-bike grid lined up, and the start lights went out. Cleland got the holeshot followed by Blevins, Young, and Hayden Schultz on his Kawasaki ZX-10R jumping into the fray. The pack piled up in the Bus Stop section, and Cleland shot away with Blevins hot on his heels. Schultz was shaking off Young to pursue the race leaders, with Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Garet Tomlinson and Ron Mears riding a Honda CBR600 wrestling for an opening.

The race leaders roared ahead of the pack with less than a second separating them. Cleland continued to hold off Blevins, and Blevins was looking for any opening. Blevins turned the fastest lap of the race on Lap 4 in his pursuit of Cleland with a 1:15.426, Cleland answered with a 1:15.765, still holding his lead. Schultz held down third and put a little distance on Young, while Tomlinson shook off Mears and stretched it out. BMW S1000RR mounted Joseph Caruso got some space on Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Jordan Pence, as the race leaders continued to go at it hammer and tongs. I twas turning into a real nail biter with the close racing at the front, with Cleland successfully thwarting Blevins’ advances. On lap eight with two laps to go, Blevins went for a pass going into the Bus Stop section and inadvertently made contact with Cleland, forcing him a little wide. Blevins squeezed by him to take the lead, and as Cleland pursued him for the last two laps, Blevins held him off with less than a one second gap between them. As they charged towards the checkers, Blevins crossed the line first, with Cleland right behind, finishing a mere 0.603 of a second behind. Their furious pursuit of each other had stretched a nearly 12 second lead over the rest of the field. Schultz crossed next for third, with Young finishing fourth, followed by Tomlinson, Mears, and Caruso. Pence, Sean Gurevich, and Brian Cox finished out the top ten. Blevins also got the P1 Racing $100 purse for being the first 600 rider across the line.

Kyle Coles was Top Novice for the weekend, riding his Kawasaki ZX-6R to four wins in Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, and Nocona Designs – C Superbike Novice turning a fastest lap of 1:19.605 on Lap 3 of Race 5, the C Superstock race.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Daisy De Simone for her combined finishes in North Texas Superbikes – Formula 1 Ladies, Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 HW Novice, and SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice aboard her Suzuki GSX-R750.

The new “Racer’s Race” award went to Tony Ugoh for spending most of the day getting his Kawasaki ZX-10R sorted out after finding oil in the radiator. He then helped a competitor fix his bike after a tumble in the races on Sunday so they could still compete against each other in Formula 1 Novice. Ugoh turned two new personal bests while finishing in the top five in all his Sunday races and grabbed a podium finish on Saturday in Solo 30 HW Novice.
