Howard and Kelsey Take Multiple Podiums, Dominguez Sets New Track Record at MotorSport Ranch with the CMRA

Ty Howard and Danny Kelsey both took multiple podiums during CMRA’s round eight sprint event on Sunday, Augsut 25, 2013 at MotorSport Ranch, Cresson, TX. Oppressive humidity and temperatures in the high 90’s greeted racers making good conditions for fast lap times on the 1.7-mile course.

Kelsey took four podiums home, winning RaceworX A Superstock Expert and HighPerformanceCrew.com A Superbike Expert classes with his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R1000. He took the wins in B Superbike Expert and TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert on his Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-R750.

Howard won the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert race aboard his Dunlop-shod KTM RC8, and took second in High Performance Crew.com A Superbike.

In Sunday’s headline Formula 1 race, Kelsey got the hole shot and took off with Howard right on his heels. Dustin Dominguez was also in hot pursuit on an Aprilia RSV4, and on lap 2 of the race turned a blistering 1:13.820 fastest lap of the entire race and setting a new track record while chasing down Howard and Kelsey. Kelsey and Howard held off Dominguez, and going into lap 3, Dominguez lost his footing and crashed in the “Rattlesnake” portion of the track. Kelsey and Howard continued to go at it hammer-and-tongs, with Kelsey throwing down a fastest lap of 1:14.217, and Howard answering with a 1:14.084. Brandon Cleland pulled into third on a Yamaha YZF-R6 while Dewayne Davis, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 wrestled with Billy Gonzalez on his BMW S1000RR for fourth place as the race leaders chased each other down. Kelsey started having some sliding issues on lap 5, and on lap 6 he went off the track in the dangerous “Ricochet” turn of track. Howard took over the lead and stretched it out to just over 20 seconds ahead of second place at the checkers while Cleland held onto second, Davis captured third, and Billy Gonzalez, William Guthrie, Eric Williams, Scott Buckley, Joseph Caruso, Peyton Inge, Joseph Caruso, and Bobby Davies rounded out the top 10.

Brandon Cleland won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race. Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race. Qualifying for the race is sponsored by 212Decals.com and Howard, Cleland and Davis all received a share of the $150 cash purse.

However, Kelsey regrouped, and the second most exciting race of the day turned out to be A Superbike with the rematch of Kelsey and Howard. Once again, Kelsey got the holeshot, and Howard applied heavy pressure from second. The racing was very intense, Kelsey turned the fastest lap of 1:14.848, but Howard answered with an even faster lap of 1:13.862, and as the crossed flags flew, Kelsey was now in second behind race leader Howard. On the final lap of the race, three turns from the finish, Kelsey set up a pass on Howard in a turn known as “Buzzards’ Neck”. Kelsey dove into the turn, just squeezed by Howard, and you could’ve thrown a blanket over the two riders as they made the final sprint for the finish. Kelsey crossed the checkers just .015 seconds ahead of Howard for the win, and their furious battle stretched out an over 28 second lead ahead of third.

Conner Blevins and Garet Tomlinson both took home multiple podiums for the middleweights. Blevins rode his Kawasaki ZX-6R to wins in South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert, C Superbike Expert and second in TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert and B Superbike Expert. Tomlinson took second in C Superbike Expert, and third in TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert and South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert astride his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Top Novice for the weekend was Doug Frenchak going four for four on his Yamaha YZF-R6, taking the wins in Lone Star Track Days B Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty C Superbike Novice, House of Paint Designs C Superbike Novice, and North Texas Superbikes B Superbike Novice .
