Kelsey Takes Five Podiums, Blevins and Whitten Take Four Each At Texas World Speedway

Danny Kelsey collected five podiums with his two Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-Rs, while Conner Blevins and Jim Whitten took four each during the CMRA’s round two sprint event on Sunday, March 24, 2013 at Texas World Speedway. A all-time record setting 802 sprint entries were greeted Sunday morning by cold and blustery weather, with 38 degree temperatures and 40 mph wind gusts creating very challenging riding conditions. The track had very little grip, and the wind was coming from an unusual direction, creating very cool track surface conditions. The CMRA postponed some of the schedule to allow the temperatures to come up before the sprints began, and shortened the races to five laps each, with seven laps for Formula 1 Expert.

Kelsey rode his Suzuki GSX-R1000 to the win in RaceworX A Superstock Expert, then to second places finishes in HighPerformanceCrew.com A Superbike Expert and Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert. He took the win in B Superbike Expert and a second in the TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert on his GSX-R750.

Conner Blevins onboard his Kawasaki ZX-6R took the wins in B Superstock Expert, South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert, C Superbike Expert, and a second place finish in B Superbike Expert.

Jim Whitten won Formula 2 Expert, Formula 40 Lightweight Expert, finished second in D Superbike Expert, and third in Lightweight Twins Expert on his North Texas Superbikes Ducati 1000SS.

Ty Howard took his Dunlop-shod KTM RC8 to a decisive win in the day’s headline race, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1. In the cold slick track conditions, it was close racing action, as Howard turned a fastest lap of 1:44.098, narrowly holding off Danny Kelsey at the line by 0.054 seconds for the win. Kelsey turned a fastest lap of 1:44.384, but couldn’t outpace Howard. Kelsey did pull a 16-second lead on Eddie Thornton, relegating him to third on his BMW S1000RR.

Brandt Dillon, William Guthrie, Billy Gonzalez, Will Zamora, Hayden Schultz, Joseph Caruso, and Jose Silva rounded out the top 10 on a 26 bike grid. Hayden Schultz also won the $100 P1 cash purse for riding the first 600 to cross the finish line during the Formula 1 race.

Howard took his second win in HighPerformanceCrew.com A Superbike Expert, again by a narrow margin of 0.90-second in front of Kelsey. This was another edge of your seat action race, as Howard and Kelsey battled it out again. Despite the weather conditions, Howard ran a blistering fastest lap of 1:43.301, Kelsey turned an equally impressive fastest lap of 1:43.686, and the two powerhouses crossed the line 16-seconds ahead of third place again. There was great action on the Novice grids too, as top Novices Jay Newton took six podium finishes and William Renville took four. Newton rode his Yamaha YZF-R6 to wins in Lone Star Track Days B Superstock Novice, House of Paint Designs C Superbike Novice, second place in Moto Liberty C Superstock Novice, and third in Road & Track Suspension Formula 1 Novice, North Texas Superbikes A Superbike Novice, North Texas Superbikes B Superbike Novice. Renville grabbed the wins in Formula 2 Novice, D Superbike Novice, OnRoad OffRoad D Superstock Novice, and 995Paintworks.com Lightweight Twins Novice on his Dunlop-shod Suzuki SV650.

Nancy Selleck, CMRA Administrator, had this to add, “Round Two was just as exciting as our opening weekend last month. After eight hours, the winner of Saturday’s endurance race was decided by a mere 3.806 seconds. And we were all thrilled to welcome back CMRA alumni Kevin Schwantz and Britt Turkington, who brought along AMA rider Blake Young for some endurance fun. On Sunday, for the second round in a row, we had another record number of race entries for sprints…802. The paddock was full and everyone had a great time. We want to thank all of our racers, sponsors, track vendors, crew, corner workers and staff for their support and a special thanks to our “long distance” members for braving the miles and snowy weather to come race with us. We truly appreciate each and every one of them.” On behalf of our racers, the CMRA would like thank our 2013 Class Sponsors including: 212Decals.com, 995PaintWorks.com, Body Evolution Fitness Center, Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing, HighPerformanceCrew.com, House of Paint Designs, Houston Superbikes, Island Racing Services, K&N Motorcycles, Lone Star Track Days, Moto Liberty, North Texas Superbikes, OnRoad OffRoad Suspension, RaceworX, Relentless Swagg, Road & Track Suspension, Six Three Cycles, South Central Race Center, Texas Tornado Boot Camp and TrackTactics Track Days.
