DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (September 18, 2006) Team Motorrad, of Asheville, N.C., made history recently in becoming the first entry for the inaugural MOTO-ST 8 Hours At Daytona to be contested on Saturday, October 21, 2006 on the 3.56-mile road course at Daytona International Speedway. Team principal Ivan Messina filed the historic entry to become the first competitor to join the top-level MOTO-ST Super Sport Twins (SST) class. The team will field the No. 55 BMW R1200S to be co-ridden by Messina as well as Frank Shockley of Greenville, S.C. and Brad Phillips of Greer, S.C. “We are really excited about the new MOTO-ST series and the format fits our concept at Motorrad,” Messina said. “We have been endurance racing for several years and MOTO-ST will allow us to continue this type of competition while meeting our goals and objectives as a company. This is also a unique opportunity to showcase BMW motorcycles that we have raced successfully in the past.” After success in vintage and historic events, Messina began racing modern motorcycles in 2003 and regularly participates in regional and national road racing competitions. His experience also includes owning and managing a WERA national endurance team and working as an instructor for the California Superbike School. Shockley began his racing career in flat-track before moving to road racing where he has competed in AMA Pro Twins, WERA, AHRMA and CCS. He won the 1986 AHRMA National Championship and two years later finished the season third overall in AMA Pro Twins. He also competed in the 2003 and 2004 Daytona Boxer Cup events and currently races in several WERA classes including the National Endurance Series. Phillips began racing in 2003 and won the WERA Southeastern region “V4″ championship in 2004 and 2005 and will likely make it three-in-a-row this year. He also has endurance racing experience and currently teams with Shockley on a Suzuki SV650. Team Motorrad received its R1200S just two weeks ago and the bike is currently being prepared in the team’s Asheville headquarters. The finished BMW will be ridden in a pair of test races before Motorrad heads to Daytona for the inaugural MOTO-ST 8 Hours at Daytona next month. “Receiving our first entry for the inaugural 8 Hours At Daytona is another landmark in the young history of MOTO-ST,” said MOTO-ST Director of Competition Colin Fraser. “We are delighted to welcome Ivan, Frank, Brad and Team Motorrad to MOTO-ST and we will always remember them for being the first to enter our series. This is another important and exciting step in the development of MOTO-ST.” While Team Motorrad was the first entry, upwards of 80 motorcycles and more than 200 riders are expected to compete in the 8 Hours At Daytona in the three MOTO-ST classes. The SST class will include bikes that produce at least 90 and no more than 118 horsepower, while the Grand Sport Twins (GST) class will feature bikes with horsepower ranging from 75 to 90. The Sport Twins (ST) class includes bikes making less than 75 horsepower. All bikes will use Sunoco Racing Fuel and will ride on Pirelli tires. MOTO-ST is organized by Professional Motorsports Productions of Toronto, Ontario, Canada and is sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) of Pickerington, Ohio. The Grand American Road Racing Association, based in Daytona Beach, Fla., provides the series with administrative and commercial support. The MOTO-ST advisory board features some of the most respected individuals in the world of motorsports, including AMA Hall of Fame members, respected motorcycle racing journalists and renowned officials from various forms of road racing.
