Ben Bostrom, Roger Hayden and Larry Pegram were all unofficially under the lap record during a private, two-day test December 19-20 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in Homestead, Florida. Geoff May recently broke the motorcycle lap record for Homestead-Miami Speedway during a CCS race event earlier this month, lapping the 2.2-mile infield road course in 1:23.131 on his Amsoil EBR 1190RS AMA Pro Superbike. During the test Bostrom, riding his 2011 Jordan Suzuki GSX-R1000 AMA Pro Superbike with no significant updates, circulated the infield road course in 1:22.2, according to Technical Manager Richie Alexander. Roger Hayden, who also rode the same National Guard GSX-R1000 he rode at the end of the 2011 AMA Pro Superbike Championship, recorded a 1:22.7. Pegram did a 1:22.78 on his Foremost Insurance/Pegram Racing BMW S1000RR while he dialed in updated BMW race kit electronics with the help of an engineer from BMW Motorrad Motorsport. All three rode on 2011-spec Dunlop control tires. Both Hayden and Pegram reported the test as being a success for them. “It went pretty good,” Hayden told Roadracingworld.com Wednesday. “We didn’t really have anything huge to test. We tried some alternate settings. Toward the end of the year last year we didn’t really test a lot. So we changed things to the bike to see how it would feel. We would go out, come back in and make a few more changes and go out and try it again.” “It went good,” said Pegram. “We had a lot of stuff we wanted to get done, but we were pretty happy with how things went. We had the new electronics we wanted to try, and we got the bike better, better, better the whole time.” As for the suitability of Homestead-Miami Speedway hosting an AMA Pro National Guard Superbike event, both Hayden and Pegram gave the venue positive reviews. “It was my first time there,” said Hayden. “It’s a pretty fun track, actually. It’s a little bumpy in some spots, but it’s got some tight corners after some straightaways. That’s going to make for some exciting racing. It will give a good chance to get up the inside of somebody and make a block pass. “I think it’s a good place to hold a National. The track’s bumpy, but it’s nice. The facility is pretty nice. I think it’s going to be a good new venue for us. I don’t have any real safety concerns. In the wet there will be some concerns. There’s some patches in the pavement in the corners. Coming out of Turn Seven the wall on the left is OK in the dry but in the wet it could be sketchy. We’ll just have to wait and see.” “I’m showing my age, but I was there back in 1996, my first year in AMA Pro. Ben said he was there, too. I didn’t know that. He said he rode a 883 Harley or something,” said Pegram. “I think the track is good everywhere, but there’s one bad corner on it. Everywhere else is safe. It’s just the fast right-hander [Turn Seven]. They need to do something with that wall. They can’t do something before we race there this year, but it’s something to address in the future. “Overall, it’s a beautiful place. And racing in the Miami area”¦I think everything about the event is going to be good. We have one little bad spot on the track we have to fix. We’ll come in and put on a really good show for these people and then get them to decide to fix that section of the track. We have to show them we’re a viable event before we can ask them to spend money on us.” Bostrom was on an airplane returning to his home in California and unavailable for comment at post time.
