Boulder Motor Sports (BMS), which fielded Marty Craggill on an 848cc Ducati 749R in the 2007 AMA Formula Xtreme Championship and planned to field the Australian on a Ducati 1098 R in the 2008 AMA Superbike Championship, has decided to sit out the 2008 AMA season. BMS Team Manager Brian Sharp told Roadracingworld.com Wednesday at Miller Motorsports Park (MMP) that his team’s 2008 racing plans, whether to stay in Formula Xtreme with the new Ducati 848 or move into Superbike on the new Ducati 1098 R, were on hold throughout last winter due to AMA Pro Racing’s late announcement (middle of January) that 1200cc Twins would be allowed to race in AMA Superbike this season. After the announcement was made, Sharp contacted Ducati to purchase a pair of 1098 Rs, but he was told units would not be available until after the start of the 2008 season. Then while Sharp waited for his motorcycles he found out that the 1098 R had not been homologated by AMA Pro Racing. “It’s hard,” said Sharp. “You can’t get rules in time, for one. Then the homologation thing. Yes, it’s on. No, it’s off. Then getting parts, in general. It’s just too late.” As for his 2009 plans, Sharp said, “At least DMG [Daytona Motorsports Group] is putting rules out now, but nothing is really set yet. They didn’t announce how long the races will be. Will the 848 make [Daytona Superbike] race distance with a stock fuel tank? And like many manufacturers, we want to be in Superbike, but we just heard that’s gonna be more like Superstock. With all that going on, where do you invest your money?” Sharp is at MMP with his semi-truck race hauler to provide hospitality space and support for Ducati’s World Superbike teams.
