Morris wins MRA Race of the Rockies, Burke, Moham claim RoR championships

Byers, CO – The MRA held round 7 of their championship series at High Plains Raceway over the weekend of September 16-17 using the shorter north course configuration.

Some of the consistent fast riders of the MRA were plagued with problems this weekend. On Friday, Shannon Moham crashed in the fast downhill section of turns 9a and 9b and was slightly injured but still completed the weekend, reinforcing his iron-man reputation. Ray Thornton crashed in Saturday morning practice but was able to get back on, salvage points Open Superbike, Formula 40, and still make a very good showing in Race of the Rockies. Ryan Burke was having some problems with his Yamaha R1M but was able to use his Yamaha R6 effectively to collect up points in his usual classes.

The MRA has really good bench depth for fast riders and it was anyone’s guess on who would be up front. At the start of Race of the Rockies, Brad Hendry took an early lead on his BMW S1000RR closely followed by Dan Turner, Mike Applegate, and Brad Morris. Morris and Applegate got by Turner early in the race and took to chasing down Hendry. On lap 6, Applegate tried to set up Hendry for a pass with a late entry, late apex move going into turn 4s. Unfortunately, Applegate didn’t know Morris was right on his tail section so Morris took the opening and got by Applegate before the late apex plan could be completed. Three laps later, Morris pushed hard on his Yamaha R1M, got by Hendry, then proceeded to click off a handful of 1:13 lap times to open up a gap and take the win.

From the start of Race of the Rockies GTU, a slightly banged up Shannon Moham took the hole shot and the lead. An even more banged up Brian Dobrowolski managed a decent start with a broken right foot which he barely was able to cram into an oversized race boot. With Moham leading GTU, Niles Gourlie, Sean Thomas, and Dobrowolski battled for the final GTU positions with less than a half a second between these three riders for most of the race. Gourlie managed to stay in front of Dobro and Thomas for all but the last two laps where Dobro was able to tick off his best times of the race to claim second.

Several championships were clinched during this second to last event for the MRA. Ryan Burke claimed the Race of the Rockies #1 plate for 2018 in addition to championships in Middleweight Supersport, Heavyweight Supersport, Open Endurance, and Open Superbike. Shannon Moham claimed championships in Formula 40 GTU, Heavyweight & Middleweight Superbike, and Race of the Rockies GTU. Matt Neuberger now owns the championship in Novice GTU. Joe Clark has clinched the SuperTwins GTU and Formula Colorado classes. Corbin Swan is the champion for 250 Production, Aaron Hersh is the 400 Production champion. Brandon Fosbinder is the Supermoto champion, Tony Baker is now the champion for Lightweight Endurance, and Andrew Schrems owns the Modern Vintage GTU class.

Brad Morris is sponsored by Dunlop, Mo-Door motorcycle garage door remotes, Pit-Bull, STM Suspension, Yamaha, and Blu-Cru.

Shannon Moham is sponsored by Nordic Nursing, Dunlop tires, Race Tech suspension, Woodcraft CFM, K&N Filters, Vortex, GPR dampers, Lockhart Phillips, Vickery Motorsports, Motors by REX, Renegade race fuels, Pit Bull stands, Imperial Sportbikes, Denver n Dakota, Segren’s Nectar, MOM, and Falicon crankshafts.
