Cleland Takes Five Again at MotorSports Ranch with CMRA

Brandon Cleland once again swept the competition, going five for five during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) seventh round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, August 21, on the 1.7-mile counter-clockwise course at MotorSports Ranch in Cresson, Texas.

A second day of milder weather, partially cloudy giving way to sunny skies, a stiff breeze and temperatures in the low 90’s were great for fast lap times. Cleland threw down, riding his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to wins in M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, B Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert, and South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert.

Daniel Adams was the standout for the Lightweights, riding his Suzuki SV650 to four wins in: D Superstock Expert, Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, and Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert, and Lightweight Twins Expert. Adams turned a fastest of lap of 1:19.449 on lap 4 of Race 20 – Lightweight Twins Expert.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was exciting, with lap times in the mid to high teens, with Brandon Young riding his Suzuki GSX-R1000, Brandon Cleland on his Yamaha YZF-R6, and Garet Tomlinson also on a Yamaha YZF-R6 grabbing the top three spots.

When the 19-bike grid lined up, Young had pole position, with Cleland in the middle, and Tomlinson on the outside of the front row. The start lights went out, and Cleland got the holeshot followed by Tomlinson, Craig Montgomery, and Young. The pack roared towards the Rattlesnake section, with Cleland was only a bike length ahead of Tomlinson, with the rest of the pack right behind. Headed into Lap 2, Young slid up the outside of Montgomery to take over third.

As the race leaders charged on, they stayed so close you could throw a blanket over them. Young got it on Lap 4, passing Tomlinson in Ricochet corner for second and turning the fastest lap of the race with a 1:15.497. Cleland answered with a 1:15.749, and Tomlinson came back a 1:15.843. Montgomery was holding down fourth while Joseph Caruso, on his BMW S1000RR, was caught in a threesome with Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Nick Doolan and Honda CBR600 mounted Ron Mears. Kawasaki ZX-10R mounted Sean Gurevich had all he could handle with “Alaska” Jack Vigneau aboard his Suzuki GSX-R1000, and Ben Jones, also on Kawasaki ZX-10R was blocking Suzuki GSX-R1000 mounted David Felio.

Cleland held his lead with a firm hand as they caught lap traffic on Lap 8, and sliced threw them with surgeon’s precision, leaving Young and Tomlinson in the tangle. On the final lap of the race, Cleland rode it even harder, stretching his lead to 1.755 over Young and taking the checkers for the win. Young crossed the line next, with Tomlinson right behind, followed by Montgomery, Doolan, and Caruso. Mears, Gurevich, Vigneau, and Jones finished out the top ten. Cleland also snatched the P1 Racing $100 purse for being the first 600 across the line.

Jeff Offutt was Top Novice for the weekend, riding his BMW S1000RR to three wins in OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 HW Novice, and second in North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice turning a fastest lap of 1:19.067 on Lap 8 of Race 22, the A Superbike race.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Brandie Cox for her combined finishes in B Superstock Expert, RaceworX –A Superstock Expert, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert aboard her Suzuki GSX-R750 and a fastest lap time of 1:19.255.

The new “Racer’s Race” award went to Jordan Pence for working on his brother Travis’s race bike late into the night after his brother went down, and getting both of them out to race multiple races on Sunday, with Travis Pence grabbing third in both Lightweight Twins Novice and Heavyweight Twins Novice with his Suzuki SV650.
