Bradley Ray stormed to the top of the times after the opening day of Bennetts British Superbike Championship free practice at Silverstone as the Buildbase Suzuki rider bids to secure his place in the Showdown ahead of tomorrow’s opening race.
Ray holds fifth place in the standings ahead of the triple-header on the 1.64-mile National circuit to decide the top six and the 21-year-old held off Jake Dixon by just 0.127s for the top spot in the closing stages of the afternoon session.
Christian Iddon fired himself to into third place for Tyco BMW; he holds a 15 point deficit to Peter Hickman in sixth place in the standings ahead of race one and held off Jason O’Halloran for Honda Racing who also is bidding for a shot at the Showdown.
Glenn Irwin picked up his pace to set the fifth fastest time for the Be Wiser Ducati team ahead of Leon Haslam heroically bounced back from a huge crash in the opening session to set the sixth fastest time ahead of Peter Hickman. The Smiths Racing BMW rider holds the final place in the top six ahead of race one, but with just seven points between himself and Danny Buchan, who ended the day 16th, he is determined to keep his FS-3 Racing Kawasaki rival behind him.
Gino Rea had a strong session for OMG Suzuki in eighth place with Tarran Mackenzie and Michael Laverty completing the top ten, with Showdown contender Josh Brookes sidelined with a technical problem which ruled him out after only ten laps of the session and put him 17th after the 2015 champion topped the opening morning session.
