Report
Howie Mainwaring celebrated both his and the Quattro Plant Kawasaki team’s first victory in a dramatic opener to the triple-header final round of the MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship in the damp conditions at Brands Hatch.
Byrne and Kiyonari chasing a record-breaking fourth title ended the opening day on the same points as they started with after both crashed out of contention, meaning the title will be decided at the Kent circuit tomorrow (Sunday).
Kiyonari high-sided off his Buildbase BMW on his second lap in the morning free practice, fracturing his left collar-bone. The Japanese rider opted to sit out the Saturday race, but he is bidding to keep his championship hopes alive by lining up in the final two races of the season on Sunday.
Kiyonari will go into the two races twelve points down on Byrne who had started his Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki from the front row of the grid, alongside first time pole-starter James Ellison on the Lloyds British GBmoto Kawasaki.
Byrne was running in second place to Quattro Plant Kawasaki’s Dan Linfoot as the race continued but on the seventh lap disaster struck for the local hero as he crashed out unhurt at Clarke Curve.
Byrne said: “I thought I’ll just sit here, watch the gap behind me and sat in second but you know you come into Clearways, and we had a similar situation in the wet qualifying in August when loads of us fell down, nothing any different and then the next thing you’re on your rear. I was sliding through the gravel actually thinking how did that just happen?! I’ve done nothing different why?”
Byrne could only watch as Mainwaring, amid a frantic finish held off the fierce challenge of Tyco Suzuki’s Josh Waters. The pair were side-by-side as they ran through Clearways on the final lap but Mainwaring won the dash to the line by just 0.047s.
Mainwaring said: “It has been a long time coming – we have had a few issues during the season but here everything fell into place and came together.”
Jon Kirkham riding the Halsall Biker Gear Kawasaki scored his first podium of the season in third with Linfoot back in fourth.
Tommy Bridewell moved into third place in the title stakes, by a single point, at the expense of his Milwaukee Yamaha team-mate Josh Brookes. Bridewell finished fifth with Stuart Easton and Ellison pushing Brookes back into eighth. James Westmoreland and Chris Walker completed the top ten.

Ryuichi Kiyonari’s title hopes take a hit as collar injury rules him out of today’s action.
Ryuichi Kiyonari’s hopes of winning his fourth British Superbike title have taken a battering today after a free practice crash left him with a fractured collarbone and ruled him out of today’s qualifying session and the first of three races at the final round of the 2014 season.
Heavy overnight rain at Brands Hatch left the track treacherously wet despite the late winter sunshine. Coming out of Graham Hill Corner, Kiyo came off on his second lap in the final Free Practice 3 session, landing hard on his shoulder and fracturing his collarbone in the same place as a prior injury last season. Kiyo was taken to the medical centre then returned to his hotel for physiotherapy and pain relief.
However, his free practice times are sufficient to allow him to race in tomorrow’s two races – and his title rival Shane ‘Shakey’ Byrne also crashed out of Saturday’s BSB race, meaning the points gap has remained unchanged at 12 points.
Pending a night of rest and medical assessment tomorrow, Kiyo may be able to race in Sunday’s two fixtures. However if he is able to do so, even a double win would not guarantee him the title as Byrne is still 12 points in front. But this weekend has proven that nothing can be assumed and that in the BSB Showdown, anything can happen. The team will try to have Kiyo out in Sunday’s warm up session and take things from there.
James Westmoreland took a top-ten finish in today’s race, bringing his BMW S 1000 RR home in ninth place and earning a third-row start in tomorrow’s second fixture.
Stuart Hicken, Team Owner, said: “It’s hugely disappointing for Kiyo to have been ruled out of racing today following a simple fall in Free Practice. We had a very real shot at the title and it seems that’s slipping out of reach. However, he’s been receiving ice water treatment and it’s prevented any swelling from occurring. Kiyo is resting up overnight and there is still a chance that he’ll be able to ride and, if not have a shot at the Championship, to at least finish the season with a good race or two. We’ll see how he fares in the morning warm up.”

MILWAUKEE YAMAHA SET FOR FINAL RACES OF 2014 AT BRANDS HATCH
The Milwaukee Yamaha team are confident of further improvement ahead of tomorrow’s final MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship races of the season at Brands Hatch after Tommy Bridewell and Josh Brookes finished the opening race in fifth and eighth respectively.
Brookes qualified on the front row for the opening race in third position with Bridewell on the second row in sixth position. Just before the race got underway rain began to fall at the Kent circuit and the team worked to get both riders ready for the changed conditions.
Brookes and Bridewell started strongly, running inside the top five over the opening laps before Bridewell ended the race in fifth whilst Brookes finished eighth.
Bridewell and Brookes will start from the third row of the grid for tomorrow’s second race in seventh and ninth respectively.
Brookes said: “I found today really frustrating, just again two seconds before we’re going to go out, it starts raining and we didn’t have time to change the bike. Last time we tried to change the bike in the pit garage we didn’t make it out of pit lane so it meant that I had to ride the bike on the dry setup link which is I think too stiff for the wet conditions.
“I rode around the best I could and did everything I could to try and gain a position, save a position, and that was just the race, how it turned out. That was all I could do. I think we’re in with a really good chance of a podium, and certainly challenging for the win, but we’ve got to wait and see what it looks like out of the window when we wake up in the morning.”
Bridewell said: “The conditions were very hard but all credit to the Milwaukee Yamaha team as we did the best we could in the situation. It was difficult but I rode the best I could and the bike felt good until later on and then we had a problem with the tyre so I was happy to finish fifth and we have moved up to third in the standings.”

Kiyonari: “I am not giving up yet”
Ryuichi Kiyonari has vowed to not give up on his hopes of a record-breaking fourth MCE Insurance British Superbike Championship title at Brands Hatch and after sitting out the Saturday race is determined to return to the track in warm up.
Kiyonari crashed out of free practice three, leaving him with an undisplaced fracture of the left collarbone. The Buildbase BMW rider however has been resting in the hotel following treatment and is determined to test his fitness in the morning during warm up.
Kiyonari said: “I still can’t believe what has happened. The crash happened so fast and I wasn’t pushing too hard, but the data said that I had more acceleration than the lap before. I just think ‘why now’ and I am disappointed for today because we have worked hard to fight for the title, but I am not giving up yet because I can’t, I have to try. I watched live timing today and now I am going to go to bed early and get up early and then visit the medical centre in the morning and try in warm up.”

2014 British Superbike Championship – Round 12
Josh Waters took second place for Tyco Suzuki during the opening race of the British Superbike triple-header earlier today at Brands Hatch. The Australian narrowly missed out on his second victory of the season on the Kent GP circuit by a miniscule 4/100ths of a second, but will start from pole position in tomorrow’s second race after setting the fastest lap.
Waters came through from 14th on the grid in the wet and greasy conditions, which is testament to the progress he has made this season in the British Superbike Championship with Tyco Suzuki. His British Supersport team-mate Taylor Mackenzie took a creditable fifth place in similar conditions during today’s 10-lap sprint race on the team’s GSX-R600. The Scottish rider will start from eighth place on row three for tomorrow’s longer feature race on the closing day of the 2014 season.
Josh Waters:
“We were so close to grabbing another win here at Brands Hatch but Howie just got the edge on me to the line. We had to come through from a tough grid position but we have pole position for tomorrow, and wet or dry, I really want another podium or two here at Brands to finish the season on a high. Thanks to the Tyco Suzuki boys for a big effort as always; it’s nice to give them a positive start to the final weekend of the year.”
Taylor Mackenzie:
“I’m happy with that. The game plan was to make a good start and just consolidate my position to give ourselves the best possible grid position for tomorrow. The conditions were tricky but the Tyco Suzuki GSX-R600 worked well and fifth place is not a bad result. Let’s see if we can jump a place or two higher tomorrow to finish the year with a bang.”
Philip Neill – Team Manager:
“Another great effort from Josh today and he did everything he could to try and win that race. To come from a sixth row grid spot, have to avoid hitting Shakey when he crashed then re-group to fight for the win shows the lad’s desire and pole position is a great bonus for tomorrow. Taylor also put in a strong performance in Supersport, with both men again showing the strength and adaptability of the GSX-R package in both classes.”
