‘Let’s get Reddy to rumble’! Redding leads title charge as Brookes bids for Showdown fightback

Scott Redding leads the charge in the Bennetts British Superbike Championship after the opening round of the Showdown, snatching the advantage back by 14 points from his Be Wiser Ducati teammate Josh Brookes, with five races remaining to decide the 2019 title.

Redding scored a double win in the opening round of the Showdown at Assen, putting his extensive knowledge of the track from his time in MotoGP into action, to regain the position at the top of the standings from Brookes who endured a tough weekend despite a second-place finish.

The Be Wiser Ducati teammates may be locking horns, but 2015 champion Brookes is focused on regaining the lead as he bids to end Redding’s success at the Leicestershire circuit following his treble win on the National layout back in May.

Tommy Bridewell claimed two podium finishes at Donington Park earlier in the season and the Oxford Racing Ducati rider knows that he needs to return to winning ways if he is to regain the advantage that he lost after crashing out in the opening race of the Showdown whilst fighting for the win.

Danny Buchan surged into fourth place in the standings courtesy of his strong performance including a podium finish in the second race at Assen, and to within four points of Bridewell for his FS-3 Racing Kawasaki team.

Tarran Mackenzie heads into his home round of the championship fifth in the overall standings and overdue a return to the podium for McAMS Yamaha, holding a 10-point advantage over Peter Hickman for Smiths Racing BMW.

Bennetts British Superbike Championship standings:

Scott Redding (Be Wiser Ducati) 595
Josh Brookes (Be Wiser Ducati) 581
Tommy Bridewell (Oxford Racing Ducati) 544
Danny Buchan (FS-3 Racing Kawasaki) 540
Tarran Mackenzie (McAMS Yamaha) 527
Peter Hickman (Smiths Racing BMW) 517

Championship leader

“It’s quite important and it feels good to lead the standings after Assen. It’s one of those things, people expected me to win at Assen, it’s like Donington before. People expected me to do it, but I was like ‘I don’t know, because I haven’t rode there for many years’.

“When I was in Moto2 and I was in the championship and I came to Silverstone, you get this pressure like people expect you to win and you expect yourself to win, but when you’ve got a good package, like I do with this team, I use that as a positive energy.

“I won three times at Donington this year so people are really going to expect me to win, and I believe I can. If the weather is good I know that I’ve got the pace and I’ve only improved since I was last there so I believe we can be in contention to take wins again.

“We just need to do the work that we do every weekend and make it the best for race day. I am looking forward to it.”
