Byers, CO, August 31, 2015 – The MRA returned to High Plains Raceway for round 6 of the 2015 season. HPR is available in two different configurations for motorcycles and this weekend the MRA opted to use the shorter, busier, highly technical north course. This layout features two distinctive downhill sections consisting of a series of esses that put an emphasis on riders’ ability to negotiate fast transitions and elevations changes at the same time.

As early as Saturday afternoon it became evident that Ryan Burke was going to be the man to beat, again. In Open Supersport Ricky Orlando took the holeshot from Burke with a returning Rob Christman coming up from row 3 to round out the first 3 places. By lap 2 Burke took the lead from Orlando and on lap 4 Burke set the Open Supersport class track record at 1:13.107. On lap 6, Christman got around Orlando, which is where the trio finished. To finish off Saturday, Burke followed this performance with a flag to flag win in Open Endurance.

Open Superbike is held early Sunday and gives the fans a preview of what they might see in Race of the Rockies later that day. Burke had trouble on the opening lap leaving Ricky Orlando, Dan Turner, and Rob Christman to battle for the lead. By lap 2, Turner and Christman got around Orlando with Christman taking the win, Turner second, and Orlando third.

Race of the Rockies once again proved to be characterized by a total domination. Burke took the holeshot and never looked back, cutting a best 1:13.296 which was a full second faster than anyone else’s best. Christman and Turner battled for the remaining podium position with Christman coming out the better for 2nd, and Turner 3rd. With this win, Burke clinched the MRA Race of the Rockies Championship and will have the #1 plate for the 2016 season! Congratulations Ryan!

Shannon Moham had substantially recovered from his nasty hand injury earlier in the year and was able to get back on the top step for Race of the Rockies GTU. Off the line, Moham was fourth into turn one and was only passed by Orlando for the rest of the race. A hard charging Evan Cordonier claimed second with Nyles Gourlie returning to the RoR GTU podium to round out the top 3. Moham continued his winning ways over the weekend with 7 wins and 2 second place finishes. Moham was handed one of his second place finished by Evan Cordonier who claimed a win in Heavyweight Superbike with a pass on Moham in the final lap of the race. Cordonier finished second to 4 of Moham’s victories in other classes, so these two racers are poised to do some serious battle for the MRA’s final round at Pikes Peak International Raceway in September.

Once again, track records were reset on the High Plains Raceway north course. As mentioned, Ryan Burke set the Open Supersport record at 1:13.107. David Absolon set 400 Production time at 1:26.103. Steven Bohn set the Amateur GTO and Novice GTO records at 1:16.499 and 1:17.497 respectively. Jon Glaefke now has the Colorado Class record at 1:22.453. Wyeth Jackson reset her own Ladies of the Rockies class record to 1:18.584. Shannon Moham claimed best time for Middleweight Supersport at a 1:16.009 with Chris Coonshead setting Modern Vintage to 1:18.681. Finally Tim Mayhew broke the Novice GTU class record with a 1:18.416 lap.

More, from a press release issued by Shannon Moham’s publicist:

Amazing Comeback for MRA racer Shannon Moham

The MRA held its 6th Round at High Plains Raceway in Byers this past weekend. What needs to be recognized is the comeback racer 945 Shannon Moham brought to the table. Round 4 saw Moham enduring a terrible crash that started with a low side that ended with both bike and rider ending their excursion slamming into the backside of some curbing on the track. Moham’s R6 was destroyed. Moham was seriously hurt during the crash when the low side ground through his hand and went all the way down to the bone and tendon. Moham also endured a serious foot injury. Moham toughened up, had the ambulance pack the wound and had staff call over the radio for his crew to get his “B” bike ready and to grab a new set of gloves. Out on his “backup” R6, Moham went on to win 2 more races and several podium finishes. After the grueling race weekend, Moham underwent surgery that entailed a graft from his upper arm to the hole in his hand. Moham, of course, took the normal “couple” days to recover. His foot was swollen to high heaven and his hand wound kept opening up due to the fact that this man isn’t used to taking it easy. Four weeks later brings us to Round 5. Moham, only weeks out from surgery, was determined to dominate. After blowing a motor, Moham was even more determined to bring a race win home in the premier Race Of the Rockies GTU race. As Moham led the GTU riders into turn one, he obviously didn’t see the red flag that his rival Evan Cordonier caused, behind him. That was the least of his worries, as he high sided immediately after Cordonier went down, into turn 2, his body catapulting over his bike and causing yet another injury, bruising his kidneys. Moham’s crew got his bike back together and he went out and took the win in Heavyweight Superbike. With two dramatic weekends in a row, Moham and his crew were quite defeated to say the least. With 2 more rounds to go, would Moham and his crew be able to pull off?

Round 6, High Plains Raceway in Beyers, CO. Temperatures are hot and multiple racers are back on the track after injuries, blown motors and a season that no one really wants to even talk about. Moham however, is ready. He’s “mostly” recovered from hand surgery, but still in pain. Thanks to his sponsors, all three bikes are up and running. Moham absolutely Dominates Saturdays race day, bringing home 5 Race Wins!! Seeing it was his Birthday, not a bad way to pass the day. Sunday, the heat is on and I don’t mean temperature wise. Moham has competition, Cordonier has a brand new Kawasaki 636 and he is itching for a win over Moham, also known to the MRA as the “Marathon Man”. He isn’t able to pull it off and Moham comes in with the win for Middleweight Superbike! The SV 650 brings in a 2nd place, against a R6, for Modern Vintage GTU. After lunch, Moham was ready to drop the hammer, once again he dominates in the MRA’s premier race, Race of the Rockies GTU, coming in first. Another win with Super Twins GTU had Moham flying high and quite happy with his day. With only one race left, Heavyweight Superbike, Moham takes the hole shot. Moham gaps Cordonier for first place, but gets a false neutral and Cordnonier gets by him and is leading lap 8, the white flag lap. Moham passes him in turn 9b and Moham streaks towards the checkered. As Moham cross’s the finish line, with a checkered flag, the red flag comes out and fans gasp as the red flag trumps the checkered, therefore, Cordonier, who was leading in lap 8, got the win. Moham graciously accepted defeat and, though he led the entire race and got the checkered flag, he knew the rule book well and high fived Cordonier for his win.

Overall not a bad weekend: 8 Race wins, a new class track record in middleweight supersport, and no major issues with the bikes. Moham would like to thank his sponsors, for which his race season wouldn’t be possible. This racer has nothing but positive comments for his suspension sponsor, year after year, Race Tech. “After tweaking the suspension a bit this year, I am incredibly happy with the amazing work that Race Tech continues to provide and they are a huge reason why I make the podium weekend after weekend”. As for his tires, Moham sported his Dunlop Championship Winning Hat during his interview for winning Race of the Rockies GTU. “Dunlop tires are incredible. There’s nothing else to say. Huge thank you to Steve Brubaker and Cory Maynard from Dunlop and Brian and Tim from Imperial Sport Bikes. Dunlop produce the tires and I just run em, ending up on the podium race after race. They must be doing something right”!! Moham would also like to thank Woodcraft, Galfer Brakes, Evergreen Recreational Vehicles, Millenium, Quick Cycles, Falicon Crankshafts, Renegade Fuel, Armor Bodies, Lockhart Phillips,GPR, Vortex, Pit Bull, Vickery Motorsports,K&N,Bazaaz, Carillo, Motonation, Motors by Rex, Rocky Mountain Photos, Papajohns, Nordic Nursing, Mom and his two daughters Denver and Dakota.

Join Moham and his crew for the last MRA race weekend of the season, at PPIR in Fountain CO, September 19-20th.
