Call Beats Pascarella In AFM Formula Pacific Race At Thunderhill (Updated)

CALL BATTLES HIS WAY TO VICTORY

Round 6 of the CT Racing Pirelli/GPR/GoPro AFM series saw the racers return to Thunderhill Raceway Park in Willows, CA, on October 3-4. While rain storms hit the San Francisco Bay to the south, Thunderhill remained warm and dry. Not to be let off too easily, the winds gusted down the straightaway at a high speed, leading to increased entry speed into some of the fastest corners.

Joey Pascarella has been the talk of the year, winning the first five rounds of the premier class Dunlop Race Tire Service Formula Pacific Race. Thunderhill is known for its long straights and he would have an uphill battle on his Yamaha YZF-R6 versus the big liter bikes. Qualifying resulted in Joey on the #3 spot, but the surprise was Cory Call on his BMW S1000RR all the way back in the third row.

Cory Call was not one to let a bad grid position hold him back and he powered through the riders in front of him, capturing first place as he exited turn 2, with Chris Siglin on his BMW S1000RR and Pascarella close behind. Coming through the grid on a mission was Deion Campbell on his Yamaha YZF-R6.

Campbell was no stranger to coming from behind as a first lap crash in an earlier race knocked Campbell all the way back to dead last. Campbell put his head down and managed to but 18 riders behind him on his way to second place. That race was with 600s, though, and now he was trying to work his way around the powerful 1000s.

Up front, Call dropped into the 1:47s while trying to break away. This nearly worked as Siglin kept Pascarella at bay for the first few laps, but as is Pascarella’s style, the former Daytona 200 champion increased his speed as the race continued and worked his way around Siglin, with Campbell in tow. This set the stage for the rest of the race, with Call leading Pascarella and Campbell.

Pascarella tested call in turn 14, taking over the lead, but the front straight favored the big BMW of Call. Pascarella needed to get in front of Call earlier to try to build up enough of a gap and with two laps to go, that’s exactly what Pascarella did. Pascarella got in front and while he was able to build a small lead, he could not shake the former #1 plate holder, Cory Call. All the while, Campbell was right in the thick of it, ready to capitalize on any mistakes.

On the final lap, It looked as though Pascarella had build up enough of a gap to secure a win, but Call strung together a flawless series of corners and set up for a drive on the long front straight. Pascarella kept his head down and on the throttle hard while Call’s BMW continued to accelerate. Call pulled out of the slipstream and as the two riders passed the finish line, The big BMW of Call crossed the line first by a matter of inches and for the first time of the season, a rider other than Pascarella took the checkered flag first.

Deion Campbell crossed the line in third right behind the other two riders, but a penalty from earlier in the race bumped Pascarella back to third, handing Campbell second place.

Other standouts from the weekend included Brett Voorhees and Ezra Beaubier. Vorhees started from the Novice grid and worked his way to the top three of the expert grid in each of his races on his Yamaha YZF-R3 and outright won his last race of the day. Beaubier, brother of MotoAmerica Superbike Champion Cameron Beaubier, put together a string of podium finishes on his new KTM RC390.
