CORY CALL DAY AT AFM ROUND 3

The CT Racing Pirelli/GPR/GoPro AFM headed North to Willows, California for the third round of action on May 30 and 31 at Thunderhill Raceway Park’s East course. The conditions were favorable as the summer heat had not yet built up.

The racing action was intense throughout the day, with the Fastline Cycles OpenGP race once again giving the fans a partial preview of the premier class, Dunlop Race Tire Service Formula Pacific. The OpenGP race not only saw Joey Pascarella denied a first place finish on his Yamaha YZF-R6, but also saw the appearance of a new player to the action in Shane Turpin on his Ducati 1199 Panigale S. Turpin led most of the race with Chris Siglin, on his BMW S100RR, in hot pursuit followed by Joey Pascarella. Siglin looked to be able to challenge for the win, but in Turn 11 on the final lap, Pascarella found room on the inside of Turn 11 to get past Siglin and slow both riders’ drive out of the tight corner leading through the esses to the back straight. Siglin was able to fight back and recapture second place; however, Turpin was now too far ahead to be caught and took the checkered flag.

As the bikes took the grid for the Dunlop Race Tire Service Formula Pacific Race, Turpin sat on pole with the best qualifying time in practice. The race started with Siglin, Pascarella, Turpin and Seabstiao Ferreira, riding a Kawasaki ZX-10R, forming a four-bike breakaway. Unfortunately, the race was red flagged on the second lap and all bikes returned to the paddock.

At the restart, we had another four-bike breakaway, but this time Ferreira was replaced by Cory Call on a just-delivered BMW S1000RR. The four riders set a blistering pace and as they came onto the front straightaway for the first time Siglin slowed and pulled off the track and was immediately attended to by medical for an issue with his right knee. With Siglin out of the race, Pascarella found his lead quickly challenged by both Call and Turpin, with Turpin taking both riders for the lead. Call and Pascarella would continue to swap places while fighting for second allowing Turpin to build a slight lead. This all changed on lap seven when Turpin suddenly aimed his bike off track at the entrance to turn 3 and rode to a stop in the infield. Pascarella was now in first place while Call starting to fade back a little. Behind them, and not yet knowing they were battling for a podium position, Ryan Sutton on a Yamaha YZF-R6 was trying his best to hold off Ferreira, who worked his way around Sutton and started to pull both riders closer to Call.

As the bikes came past the line for the final lap to take the checkers, Pascarella’s victory was cut short by a disqualification and the win was inherited by Call. Ferreira came in second just in from of Sutton.YZF-R6. The disqualification of Pascarella is subject to appeal and the results of the race remain provisional until the Board of Directors declares them finalized.
