Canadian racers Sherstan and Decker sweep Masters of the Mountains expert classes

Miller Motorsports Park, Tooele UT The weather started off cool and calm for the second round of the Masters of the Mountains road race series, but things heated up quickly when wind gusts in excess of 60 mph added to the challenge and two Canadians swept the expert classes. Jesse Sherstan of Stony Plain, Alberta took his Intermountain Racer’s Supply GSX-R1000 to a perfect weekend in the big bike classes, winning all three races entered including the premier class, King of the Mountain GTO. “This was a weekend I’ve been shooting for for a long time. I ended up putting down the fast lap of the weekend in crappy conditions, and led every race flag-to-flag. It was a nice change,” said Sherstan. In the King of the Mountain GTO race, Sherstan got out to a good lead leaving Ryan Brand and Jeff Stern to battle in extremely windy conditions. Stern got by Brand on lap three and knocked out solid, quick laps with a charge that brought him within two seconds of Sherstan before the race was stopped with a red flag on lap nine of the 14 lap race. “I got on the gas and was watching the gap on the guys behind me,” said Sherstan. “Jeff (Stern) was tangling with Ryan (Brand) and I got a good gap on them, so I backed off a little. Once I saw Jeff reeling me in I put the hammer down and we had a red flag shortly after. That saved me a little stress.” Sherstan added, “I want to thank my parent’s company, TD Transports, Kory Cowan and Aaron Clark. They’ve been a huge help this season. Also AXO, Arai, Galfer and FMX Optics. See you at round three with WERA.” Scott Decker of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta on the Phantom Freightlines Suzuki GSX-R600 had a near perfect weekend with wins in Middleweight Superbike, King of the Mountain GTU, Heavyweight Superstock, and a single forth place against the liter bikes in Open Superbike. “I was most happy with my King of the Mountain GTU race. It went just as planned,” said Decker. “I nailed my start and just put my head down. I didn’t want to have Jeff Stern and Dave Lewis to have any kind of sniff, so I wanted to get out and get away real quick so I didn’t have to worry about battling with them. After a few lap I saw I gapped them, so I just put it on cruise control.” Decker’s biggest fight of the day came from Lewis on the Budweiser Ducati in Middleweight Superstock. Decker got the hole-shot and lead two laps, with Lewis passing in turn 1 on the brakes. Lewis put his head down and he and Decker gapped the field until the last lap where a sudden gust of wind forced a mistake from Lewis forcing him into the dirt and handing Decker his final win of the day. Decker added, “I’d like to thank Argo Motorsports, Suzuki Canada, my wife and my daughter “¦ without their support I couldn’t race. I love coming down to see you guys and race. Miller is such a good track and UtahSBA does such a good job running the club, I wish our grids were a little bigger.” The new racer introduction and licensing program offered by UtahSBA was a success in its second weekend, with 14 students in the program and eleven going on to regular racing Sunday. RacingExperience lets riders interested in racing test the waters with a UtahSBA membership, a new racer certification class, a mentor, track time, practice starts and a mock race all on a regular race weekend for just $200. Regular trackday-prepped bikes are OK, so full race-prep is not required. The seven-race Mountains series, developed by Miller Motorsports Park, organized by the Utah Sportbike Association (UtahSBA) and sanctioned by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA), was created to encourage competitive road racing at the club and regional levels. In its seventh year, the series has quickly turned into a premier event drawing top-level talent from around the nation.
