Veteran Michael Barnes Learning DIS All Over Again

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla., (Oct. 22, 2005) — For years, Floridian Michael Barnes has been a fixture during motorcycle races at historic Daytona International Speedway in March and October.

During this weekend’s Fall Cycle Scene, Barnes is finding himself learning quite a bit about the storied racing facility. Last fall, the motorcycle track was reconfigured to 2.95 miles and in June, a portion of the infield was repaved.

Even though Barnes raced on the new motorcycle course in March, he’s picking up valuable information about the new pavement that he hopes to use to his advantage during March’s Daytona 200 Week.

“With the new configuration and the new pavement, we’re learning more every time on the track,” said Barnes, who lives in Boca Raton, Fla., and rides for M4 EMGO Suzuki. “It’s pretty much all about March other than trying to do a little extra attention for our sponsors in the Formula USA races.”

Barnes, who earned two runner-up finishes on Saturday, gives a thumbs-up to the repaved portion of the infield road course and says the ride around DIS is much smoother.

“The whole course is real smooth,” said Barnes, who used to live in Daytona Beach and attended nearby Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. “The little transition we used to have coming out of Turn 1 that would bump you out of shape isn’t as bad. The whole track is a lot smoother. Now, it’s just a matter of getting the new reference points and timing bumps and quirks back downloaded into your brain again. I’ve raced that old track so many times, that the little spots on the track were like timing elements. It’s just a matter of re-learning a few little spots.”

Barnes will return to “The World Center of Racing” in March and ride for M4 EMGO Suzuki in the Daytona 200 By Honda Formula Xtreme event as well as the Supersport race. This year, he rode for M4 EMGO Suzuki subbing for the injured Vincent Haskovec, who won the 2005 Daytona Superstock race.

While subbing for the popular Haskovec was a difficult task for Barnes, he was able to develop chemistry with the team quickly.

“Just coming to this team and their preparation and professionalism with the team, it was easy to come into it . . . and having guys that accepted me and we got a long real well. We’ve so far worked real well together. We believe we’ve got a real strong package.

“The biggest thing is the amount of respect that I have for Vincent and the person he is. You got such a popular guy like that and to come in and fill those shoes is a tall order. But I have been around a lot and people know me and know what kind of person I am and that I have that respect. I think that might have played into why they called me. I’ve got the experience to hop on any bike.”

Autograph session: Select Formula USA riders will participate in an autograph session on Sunday, 11:30 a.m. at the entrance to the NEXTEL FANZONE. Among the riders scheduled to participate include Jeff Wood, David Estok, Robert Jensen, Scott Harwell and Scott Greenwood.
