There’s been a change of plans regarding how championship points will be awarded in the MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North America Road Racing Series in 2016.

In 2015, the Superbike and Superstock 1000 classes raced on the track at the same time, but each class’ competitors received championship points based upon their race finish position respective to their class.

For instance, if a Superbike rider finished fifth overall but fourth among the Superbike riders they received fourth-place points, 13, toward the Superbike Championship. And a Superstock 1000 rider that finished fourth overall and first among the Superstock riders received first-place points, 25, toward the Superstock 1000 Championship.

In October of 2015, MotoAmerica issued a press release announcing that they were changing the point scoring system so that riders in combined Superbike/Superstock 1000 races would only receive championship points for their overall finishing positon irrespective of their class.

With this system, a Superbike rider who finished fifth overall but fourth in class would receive fifth-place championship points, 11, and a Superstock 1000 rider who finished fourth overall and first in class would receive fourth-place points, 13, even though they won the Superstock 1000 race.

Today at the 2016 season riders briefing at Circuit of The Americas, a new change to the point scoring system was announced by MotoAmerica officials.

Now, a Superbike rider who finishes fifth overall and fourth in the Superbike class will receive fifth-place points, 11, based on their overall finishing position irrespective of their finishing position in class, but a Superstock 1000 rider who finishes fourth overall will receive 25 points for being the first finisher in the Superstock 1000 class.

And this new point scoring system will be applied exactly the same way for the Supersport and Superstock 600 classes, which will also run in combined races in 2016.
