Ancien Fourth Consecutive Formula Ultra Win Extends Lead in OMRRA Championship at Portland International Raceway

Summer arrived early in the Pacific Northwest as the entire paddock dealt with unseasonably high temperatures and the sweltering woes of a triple digit heat wave parked over the Western part of the country. With track temperatures soaring well above 150 degrees, the track conditions presented a challenge to the field of racers and fans alike. There was no escaping the heat the entire weekend. On Saturday, prior to the drop of the first green flag, a touching tribute to fallen rider, #303 Kelly Johnson, took place with racers, riders and fans of the greater Northwest riding community gathered in remembrance by taking part in Honor Laps and singing the national anthem as Miss Johnson had done for OMRRA in recent years. The races both Saturday and Sunday showcased Portland International Raceway’s “Festival Curves” adding three tight chicane turns to the two mile circuit for the smaller displacement machines and an added layer of spectator excitement.

In the APEX Formula Ultra Championship, Chris Ancien continued to dial-in his Yamaha R1 and picked up his fourth consecutive win in the Formula Ultra series. In the first races, Ancien broke out to an early lead with Kevin Pinkstaff and Jeremy Coffey chasing close behind. Andy DiBrino was relegated to using two back up bikes over the weekend and was unable to mount an attack on the lead and podium in both races. The talented DiBrino is not out of it but he has his work cut out for him if he’s going to make a run for the #1. Dan Wilson suffered a DNF with a turn 4 incident and as a result, did not acquire a single Formula Ultra championship point. Despite DiBrino’s early weekend luck, he still collected points in the second race aboard his Yamaha R6 while at a significant disadvantage. With Coffey and Pinkstaff applying the pressure to Ancien, he would not have an easy win. The soaring temperatures made grip a factor and with pushing his superbike through turn 4 on two occasions, Ancien opened the door to Coffey and Pinkstaff. However, the cagey veteran put his head down and was able to make up for his early errors and go on to win both contests.

Despite a ripping start from Kevin Pinkstaff to lead early and numerous challenges and assumption of the lead for Jeremy Coffey, Ancien was able to pull off the victories with a sprint to the line to snatch victory away from Coffey. On the victories, Ancien had this to say after the win, “It was a challenging weekend and I’m glad we were able to pick up the hard-fought wins. I want to thank the OMRRA volunteers for their hard work in the heat and providing racers the opportunity to race at PIR. I want to dedicate my wins to Kelly Johnson and Peter Lenz. Thank you to Sage and Matt at MTech, Barry and Delaney at KFG Racing, Pirelli, Beaverton Motorcycles, Vortex, Shoei, Motonation, Galfer, Cox Racing, Don Beck at SBKUNDG and Speedmob for their support of the years.” The championship is heating up and the second half of the season is bound to bring even greater excitement as the chase continues.

APEX Formula Ultra Championship Standings – Round 3 of 6:

1: Christopher Ancien – 116 pts

2: Andy DiBrino – 80 pts

3: Kevin Pinkstaff – 67 pts

4: Jeremy Coffey – 63 pts

5: Joe Rocha – 24 pts

In the Clubman Championship, which sees competitors from a variety of classes in a points race based on the best of two classes, Nobi Iso, showed the field the way around besting them astride his Yamaha YZF- R3. Iso continues to stretch his lead. Despite dominating races with incredible ease, Oliver Jervis lost further ground on the first place Iso due to fewer points available with fewer attendees in the classes he competes. With consistent finishes aboard his air-cooled Ducati 992 and Yamaha R3, Matt O’Rourke has pulled himself to within two points of Jervis. Adam Faussett was back in action and made his presence known by putting himself in the top 5 of series leaders mounted on his Ninja 300. Josh McKay continues to put points on the board piloting a GSX-R600. McKay won the first race of the weekend in Open Sportsman and went on to podiums in 600 Classic Superbike and 450 Superbike. Impressively, McKay took his classic 600 to a fourth place finish in the 600 Supersport class.

Clubman Championship Standings – Round 3 of 6:

1: Nobi Iso – 137 pts

2: Oliver Jervis – 119 pts

3: Matt O’Rourke – 117 pts

4: Josh McKay – 100 pts

5: Adam Faussett – 98 pts

In the Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship, Dean Willoughby continues to lead the pack. The heat may have been a factor in a number of racing results and the vintage group had the added challenge of asking for reliability out of machines manufactured a half century ago. Two-time champ and second in points, Mica Grohn suffered a DNF near the end of a contest and couldn’t put a dent into Willoughby’s lead his despite lower place finishes over the weekend. Ryan Shanahan continues to lead the group…on Sundays. With Shanahan pulling half-time duty and winning, Grohn’s DNF and Willoughby’s lackluster finishes, Shanahan has pulled himself to within range of the championship lead. The second half of the season could see a multitude of suprises. Willoughby and Grohn will have to get back on track or the possibility of OMRRA having a major series champion crowned racing on a part-time basis is greater. Can Ryan “The Sunday Spoiler” Shanahan with the faltering fates of others, pull off a run for the top spot? Stay tuned…

Langlitz Leathers Vintage Championship Standings – Round 3 of 6:

1: Dean Willoughby – 55 pts

2: Mica Grohn – 48.5 pts

3: Ryan Shanahan – 41.5 pts

4: Daric Cheshire – 20.5 pts

5: Austin McCabe – 18.5 pts
