Round 1 of the Law Tigers’ Sandia Motorcycle Roadracing Championships hosted by SMRI was held at Sandia Motor Speedway on Sunday May 20th, 2018.

First time ULGP victor Chris Coriz stepped into the limelight in his first full year as an Expert after being promoted mid-season during the 2017 campaign. Coriz battled for several laps with veteran Kevin Gibson before passing due to a Gibson bobble leaving the turn 3 hairpin, leaving Gibson to fend off Dylan Beck and Jesse Beck to stand on the second step of the podium.

Scott Cloninger, who has built a reputation for close races over the last several years, was again involved in the closest race of the day, this time overcoming Richard Hernandez to win the Amateur Open Superbike race by 0.266 seconds. Cloninger stalked Hernandez for most of the race threatening to pass on several occasions, but Hernandez held firm until the final turn. Cloninger lagged on the drive to the ultimate turn, then grasped a speed advantage on the exit of turn 7 to win a drag race to the finish line. Cloninger also won races in SMRI’s Amateur Thunderbike and Amateur 250 Supersport classes, and stood on the podium for Amateur Middleweight Superbike, Expert Middleweight Superbike, Amateur 500 Supersport, and Formula 40 classes!

Madd-1 Racings’ Novice Super Street saw first time racer Curtis Salazar atop the podium with fellow new racers Tim Meeks and Steve Mulkey rounding out the podium. Fourth place went to yet another new racer, David Hall, with class sponsor Cedric Madden, on leave from his current overseas posting, making an excellent showing!

Round 2 of the Series is scheduled to take place on Sunday, June 17th.

With Memorial Day approaching, SMRI wishes to thank all those who have served in the US Armed Forces in defense of our country.
