Chris Duran stalked Reno Karimian until the very end, then slipped past and pulled away to win the Formula One race in the season-opening round of Moto West Grand Prix competition March 10 at Willow Springs International Raceway.

Riding a Dunlop-shod, Duran Racing-backed BMW S1000RR, Duran turned a best lap of 1:22.956 en route to a 0.261 second margin at the line after 10 laps on the 2.5-mile circuit.

Karimian, on a Dunlop-shod, A1R-backed Kawasaki ZX-10R, had the consolation of turning the fastest lap of the race, a 1:22.951, on his way to second.

Scott Tillery, aboard a Kawasaki ZX-10R, finished ahead of Jeff Stern, who also was aboard a ZX-10R.

It was Duran, Karimian and Tillery in that order on the podium spots in Open Superbike as well. Duran took the wins in 600cc Superstock and 600cc Superbike as well, while Tillery took the Open Superstock win and Stern won the Formula 40 Heavyweight race.

The weekend’s event was the first for the new racing series, backed by the owners of the Motoyard track day organization. Moto West Grand Prix has announced an eight-race series at Willow Springs for 2013, with races at the big 2.5-mile track and the smaller, tighter 1.8-mile Streets of Willow circuit. Organizers said the weekend drew 103 competitors and 257 race entries.
