Howard/Fillmore and Your Pace or Mine? Grab Top Spots With CMRA At MotorSport Ranch

Ty Howard and Chris Fillmore grabbed the overall and Heavyweight wins in the Team 60 race aboard their KTM 1290 Super Dukes while Your Pace or Mine? team riders Jeromy Kumper, Braeden Ortt, and Gavin Williams brought home the Ultra-LW GP and Overall Endurance wins once again with their Yamaha YZF-R3 in the third round of the Ultra-Lightweight Endurance series this past Saturday, July 22, 2017, at MotorSport Ranch.

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) Saturday schedule began with Mini and Lightweight Sprints, the 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, and finished with Race Tire Services Team 60, bringing 10 hours of racing trackside to MotorSport Ranch. Cresson, Texas. Clear sunny skies with temperatures in the low 100’s made for challenging riding conditions on the 1.7-mile clockwise course.

The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, with over 30 bikes on the grid in combined entries each for the 500 Superstock, Ultra LW GP, E Superbike, 500 Superbike and 500 Classic lightweight sprints.

The 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance race had a large turnout, with the endurance classes of Von Hertell Racing Services – 500 Superstock, 500 Classic, Ultra-Lightweight GP, Road & Track Suspension – E Superstock, and Formula 4 represented. As the 35 bike grid lined up for the start, a battle was brewing between Your Pace or Mine and MiniMotion. The start lights went out, and the grid surged ahead with MiniMotion and Your Pace or Mine out in front, followed by Heavy Lightweights, Leather & Lace, Von Hertell/Antic Racing, with Sport Rider Coaching and HBR all vying for the top spots at the end of hour 1.

Heading into Hour 2, Your Pace Or Mine held the lead with MiniMotion hot on their heels, until they suffered a mishap, and the other teams surged forward. With good racing all the way to the back of the grid, the frontrunners shuffled up some spots as the heat started taking its toll on the riders. At the end of hour 2, Your Pace or Mine held a two lap lead over the rest of the field, with Leather & Lace running second on a Kawasaki Ninja 300R, Team Heavy Lightweights is third, Von Hertell/Antic Racing in fourth, Sport Rider Coaching in fifth, and HBR rounding out the top 6 and all on Yamaha YZF-R3s.

The heat was brutal as the teams continued to circulate, and the lap times stayed fast during hour 3. Your Pace Or Mine still held a one lap lead over the field as Team Heavy Lightweights moved into second, Sport Rider Coaching up into third, the Von Hertell/Antic Racing team of Isaac Bauman, Simon Cosmo Hertell, John McKenzie, and Jesse Smartt held fourth, with HBR moving into fifth, and MotoBros into sixth on their Yamaha YZF-R3. Going into hour 4, the heat was taking its toll when two bikes made contact and went down, causing a red flag and an approximately 20 minute race stoppage. The full restart got the action back on, as the field once again sorted itself out. Heading into hour 5, the race leaders battled each other for dominance as Your Pace Or Mine stretched their lead to two laps over the rest of the field.

During the final hour, Your Pace Or Mine held on to the lead and stretched it to three laps. Von Hertell/Antic Racing got around MotoBros for second with the Sport Rider Coaching team of Ben Gooding, Rab McNaught, Jordan Pence, and David Rice dropping Team Heavy Lightweights to fifth while the Leather & Lace team of Shandra Crawford, Chris Hamlet, Ana Duran-Olivares, and Albert Richardson held onto sixth. As the clock wound down, the leaders held their spots.

Your Pace or Mine took the Ultra-LW GP Endurance and overall wins with a fastest lap of 1:24.256 and 223 laps completed. Von Hertell/Antic Racing was next with second in Ultra-LW GP Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:27.141 and 220 laps. The MotoBros team of Cory Burleson, Isaiah Burleson, and Craig Thomson was next, finishing third in Ultra-LW GP Endurance and third overall, with a fastest lap of 1:25.038, and completing 219 laps. Sport Rider Coaching was next, with fourth in Ultra LW GP Endurance and fourth overall, with a fastest lap of 1:26.644 and 219 laps. The Heavy Lightweights team of Dewayne Davis, Andy Gilliland, Sean Gurevich, Ty Howard, and Carl Price was next, with fifth in Ultra LW GP Endurance and fifth overall, with a fastest lap of 1:28.145 and 218 laps. Leather & Lace rounded out the top six, with sixth in Ultra LW GP Endurance, a fastest lap of 1:27.325 and 216 laps.

The Team 60 race rounded out the racing day, with the 16 team grid lined up for the Le Mans style start. The lights went out and the action was fierce, with the Howard/Fillmore team battling the Burleson/Phillips team for the lead with the Doolan/Nassaney team and Martins/Vigneau teams in hot pursuit. The McDonald/Tessier and Contreras/Orchard teams fought through traffic to vie for the top spots. The 16 team grid was running fast as the Howard/Fillmore duo tried to shake the tenacious Burleson/Phillips team off their six. As the pit lane opened and the rider swaps started taking place, the race leaders got away cleanly and continued their furious pursuit of each other. With such close racing action at the front, it was a barn burner to see who was going to end up in the top spots. Howard/Fillmore held the lead, but couldn’t quite shake Burleson/Phillips, but the continued to stretch the legs of the Super Duke to gain some ground.

As the final seconds on the time clock wound down,Howard/Fillmore took the checkers with a fastest lap of 1:16.946, with Burleson/Phillips finishing next with second in Heavyweight and second overall and a fastest lap of 1:16.350. Doolan/Nassaney edged Martins/Vigneau for first in Middleweight and third in overall with a fastest lap of 1:18.571, followed by McDonald/Tessier for fifth overall and second in Middleweight with a fastest lap of 1:20.917. Contreras/Orchard round out the top with fourth in Heavyweight, and sixth overall and a fastest lap of 1:19.851.
