MotoAmerica Superbike racer Chris Ulrich introduced local radio personalities to motorcycle road racing with rides on his GEICO Suzuki GSX-R1000 two-seat Superbike Thursday at Road Atlanta, site of this coming weekend’s MotoAmerica AMA/FIM North American Road Races.
Ulrich reached speeds of 160 mph during three-lap rides he gave to Brandi Britain, co-host of The Morning Show on Rock 100.5 Atlanta’s Classic Rock, and Eric “Dutch” Van de Steeg, who works for 92.9 The Game, an all-sports radio station in Atlanta, and the guests came away with memorable experiences.
“I don’t know much about motorcycle racing, so I wanted to have a real, hands-on experience, because I don’t think you can tell someone how exciting it is,” Britain said, after riding with Ulrich. “It was awesome! I have a lot to talk about tomorrow, especially to the grown men [at the radio station] who were too afraid to do this. They really should have come out here. That was awesome. I would do this again in a heartbeat, and I want to come watch the races now.”
“Honestly, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had,” said Van de Steeg, who commutes to work daily on a motorcycle. “I’ve done everything from jumping out of planes, hang gliding, all of that stuff, but this was probably one of the biggest adrenaline rushes I’ve ever had. When he came around that turn and hit the straightaway you’re holding on with everything you’ve got and the front wheel comes up and he’s Braaap! Braaap! Braaap! It was everything I could ever ask for. I’m ready to go again.”
Britain and Van de Steeg both said they planned to use footage from the three GoPro cameras on Ulrich’s two-seat Superbike to post videos about their experiences on their respective websites.
For over a decade, Ulrich and his team have offered rides on two-seat race bikes to reporters to help promote road racing events and motorcycling in general. Ulrich has given more than 800 two-seat race bike rides since 2003.
