RACING HEATS UP AS CVMA WINTER SERIES WINDS DOWN 

Rob Christman Secures the CVMA Number 1 Plate

Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association flagged off 27 races this past weekend during the penultimate round of the club’s 7-event Winter Series. With the majority of the season in the books, many riders were celebrating championships secured or scrambling to accrue points in pursuit of year-end hardware.

CVMA’s coveted number 1 plate is awarded to the Open Shootout champion, and with consistent wins in the class aboard his Suzuki Pirelli-shod GSX-R1000 Rob Christman has synched the 2015 title one round early. It was not without trials, however, as the Coloradan had engine issues right before Sunday’s 12-lap race.

“Two laps into Sunday practice my motor locked up.” Says Christman. “But thanks to my tech Danny Anderson we were able to get our old engine back in. He was putting on the bodywork as I was pulling on my leathers, all while second call for my race was coming in over the PA! The clutch felt a little goofy at the start but by the end of the first lap we were able to pull away and bring home a win.”

“The Open Shootout race with Christman was my best race of the weekend,” says Daytona Anderson, who came in second behind Christman on Sunday morning on his Suzuki GSX-R1000. “We had a good race going for about 4 laps, but my rear tire lost air pressure and I had to limp thru the last eight laps.”

Anderson had better luck in Open Supersport, taking the win both days over James Romero on a BMW S1000RR. With two Open Supersport races left in the season and just two points separating the two riders, Round Seven is sure to be exciting. “It’s on!” says Anderson.

Formula Middleweight was an intense dogfight both days. Saturday’s race saw Andrew Zabzdyr in first from flag to flag on his AP MotoArts Yamaha YZF-R6, but Michael Gilbert and Chad Lewin were never far behind on their Yamaha YZF-R6s. Gilbert nipped at Zabzdyr’s heels for the first five laps and even showed the leader a wheel on a few occasions, but in the end Lewin slipped into second with a daring last-lap pass. Gilbert took the win on Sunday after dicing with and eventually passing Zabzdyr. Kris Aldeman took third.

Wyeth Jackson had another stellar weekend, taking wins in Formula 40 Middleweight and FemmeWalla on both days aboard her Kawasaki ZX-6R. She set new records in both classes in the process, logging a 1:54.67 lap in FemmeWalla and a scorching 1:53.31 in Formula 40 Middleweight.

With the conclusion of Round 6 another action-packed race weekend is in the books. The final round of the CVMA Winter Series takes place on the weekend of April 18th and 19th.

CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.
