Cleland, Ortt Win Big Again at Motorsport Ranch with CMRA

CMRA number one plate holder Brandon Cleland was back with three wins during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) sixth round of sprint races this past Sunday, August 23. A second day of sweltering heat with temperatures in the low 100’s greeted competitors from as far away as Arkansas, Florida, and Mexico City as the lap times stayed fast on the 1.7-mile, 11-turn counterclockwise course at MotorSport Ranch, in Cresson, Texas.

Cleland took a thrilling win in the premier Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert aboard his Pirelli shod Yamaha YZF-R6, and took two more in B Superbike Expert and South Central Race Center – C Superstock Expert. Cleland also won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race. Cleland’s next event will be competing at New Jersey Motorsports Park with MotoAmerica, September 11- 13, in the Superstock 600 class.

Braeden Ortt, the 15-year-old Canadian racer, was once again stiff competition, taking two wins and six additional podiums on his Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6, winning Rookie Expert Heavyweight, B Superbike Expert, taking second in RaceworX A Superstock Expert, 212Decals.com A Superbike Expert, C Superbike Expert and third place in B Superstock Expert, South Central Race Center  C Superstock Expert, and Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert. Ortt will also be competing at New Jersey Motorsports Park with MotoAmerica, September 11- 13, in the KTM RC 390 Cup.

The Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert race promised to be exciting, with morning qualifying having the top 10 competitors all turning lap times below 1:19. Cleland turned the fastest lap of 1:14.695 to grab the pole.

The start lights went out and Cleland lept out in front. Brandon Young on his Suzuki GSX-R1000 was right on his heels with Ortt and his Yamaha YZF-R6 in pursuit. Cleland crushed Lap 2 with the fastest lap of the weekend, turning a 1:14.567. Young answered with a 1:15.275 while Ortt hung in with a 1:15.409. Craig Montgomery, riding a Suzuki GSX-R1000 tangled with Bobby Davies on a Yamaha YZF-R6 turning a 1:16.487 to Davies’ 1:17.321, for fourth. Cleland held the lead the entire race, inching away from Young. Coming on to the front straight for the final time, Cleland had stretched his lead to 5.462 seconds over second place, taking the checkers and the win. Young snagged second, while Ortt crossed the line third, Montgomery held fourth, and Davies in fifth. Joseph Caruso, Brett Heim, Kevin Randall, Daniel Carrera, and Jordan Pence rounded out the top 10.

Walter Walker III took the Top Novice spot with six combined podiums on his Suzuki SV650 and Suzuki GSX-R600, taking the wins in North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, Lightweight Twins Novice, North Texas Superbikes -D Superbike Novice, Formula 2 Novice, D Superstock Novice, and second in JT’s Performance Plus – C Superbike Novice.

Daisy DeSimone won the “Jennifer Millsap Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A.G. Horn, for her combined finishes in four races on her Suzuki GSX-R750.
