Cleland Grabs Three at Texas World Speedway with CMRA

Brandon Cleland once again rose above the competition, riding his Pirelli-shod, RES prepped Yamaha YZF-R6 to three wins during the Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association’s (CMRA) ninth round of Bridgestone/CMRA Championship sprints this past Sunday, October 9, on the 2.9-mile, 15 turn course at Texas World Speedway, College Station, Texas.

An overnight low of 55 degrees made slick track conditions for morning practice, but as the racing action began the weather warmed up to the mid 80’s and made for great lap times. Cleland threw down, riding his RES-prepped, Pirelli-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to wins in M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert, 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert, and C Superbike Expert.

Danny Dominguez was the standout for the Lightweights, riding his Suzuki GSX-R600 to four wins in: Classic, Century Trucks and Vans – Formula 2 Expert, and Century Trucks and Vans – D Superbike Expert, and Formula 40 Lightweight Expert. Adams turned a fastest of lap of 1:50.399 on Lap 4 of Race 9 – Formula 2 Expert.

Morning qualifying for Sunday’s headline race, M4/P1 Racing – Formula 1 Expert was exciting, with lap times in the mid to high forties, with Brandon Cleland on his Yamaha YZF-R6, Craig Montgomery aboard his Kawasaki ZX-10R, and Nick Doolan, also on a Yamaha YZF-R6 grabbing the top three spots.

The 19-bike grid lined up, Cleland had pole position, with Montgomery in the middle, and Doolan on the outside of the front row. The start lights went out, and Cleland got the holeshot, with Montgomery and Doolan going at it like a pack of fighting squirrels. The pack roared through the infield towards the back straight, with Cleland staying just ahead of Montgomery and Doolan, and the rest of the pack close behind. Headed into Lap 2, Cleland hammered down, turning a blazing 1:44.548 lap time and started to check out. Doolan and Montgomery were all over each other in pursuit of Cleland, with Montgomery turning a 1:45.395 and Doolan answering with a 1:45.434 while in the chase.

As the race leaders charged on, they stayed so close you could throw a blanket over them, and their furious pursuit of each other started opening a gap on the rest of the field. Cleland held his lead with a firm hand, just eluding Montgomery and Doolan’s grasp as they stretched their lead to 12 seconds over the rest of the field. On the final lap of the race, Cleland rode even harder, stretching his lead to 3.071 over second and taking the checkers for the win. Montgomery crossed the line next, a mere 0.23 seconds ahead of Doolan right behind him. Jeff Wrobel, Brandon Young, and Steven Nedd followed, with Ron Mears, Joseph Caruso, Alonzo Contreras, and Jordan Pence, finishing out the top ten. Cleland also snatched the P1 Racing $100 purse for being the first 600 across the line.

Top Novice was a tie between Umayr Kaleem and his Yamaha YZF-R6 and Terence Ladner on his Yamaha YZF-R1, with both taking four wins each. Kaleem topped the box in Lone Star Track Days – B Superstock Novice, Moto Liberty – C Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – B Superbike Novice, and Nocona Designs – C Superbike Novice, and turned a fastest lap of 1:50.061 on Lap 6 of Race 5 – C Superstock. Ladner took the top spots in OnRoad OffRoad Suspension – A Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes – A Superbike Novice, SpeedFreakDecals.com – Formula 1 Novice, and Crazy Jack’s Powersports – Formula 40 HW Novice, turning a fastest lap of 1:47.967 on Lap 6 of Race 12, the A Superbike race.

The Jennifer Millsap “Get it Girl” $100 award, sponsored by A. C. Horn, went to Brandie Cox for her combined finishes in B Superstock Expert, RaceworX –A Superstock Expert, and 212Decals.com – A Superbike Expert aboard her Yamaha YZF-R6 and a fastest lap time of 1:51.886.

The new “Racer’s Race” award went to Daisy DeSimone for having an issue that had her working on her bike doing a lower motor tear down late into the night, getting her bike running, but having to bump start it for every single practice and race on Saturday and Sunday, and still winning Ladies Formula 1, and finishing in the top five in her other classes.
