WorldSSP: Cluzel Fastest on Friday
After a red-flagged first session, FP2 sees ESS riders shine and Thailand winner top the times
After sun in the morning, a cloudier afternoon session saw WorldSSP back on track at MotorLand Aragón in Spain, with French MV Agusta rider Jules Cluzel keeping his form from FP1 to go fastest from FIM Europe Supersport Cup (ESS) rider Axel Bassani. Cluzel’s MV Agusta teammate Lorenzo Zanetti was third quickest.
Puccetti pair Sofuoglu and Krummenacher ended the day in P7 and P8 respectively after locking out the top three in the morning, and will surely be looking for more pace for Tissot-Superpole on Saturday.
Roberto Rolfo, after a difficult weekend in Thailand, ended the day in P4 ahead of fellow Italians Alessandro Zaccone and Cristian Gamarino. Zaccone was another ESS rider who shone on their first outing in 2016, as the new FIM Europe Supersport Cup gets underway for the season.
Honda’s title contender PJ Jacobsen ended the day in P9, and British GRT rider Gino Rea rounded out the top ten for the day on his MV Agusta, just ahead of local rider Nico Terol, who will be looking to graduate from Superpole 1 tomorrow to fight for a top grid position at his home round.
The top ten fastest riders from Friday go directly to the Tissot-Superpole 2 session on Saturday, with the rest in Superpole 1 to do battle over the last two spots in the final qualifying session to determine Sunday’s grid for the race.
WorldSSP Tissot-Superpole 1 begins at 11:30am local time (GMT +2) on Saturday the 2nd of April. Follow everything on WorldSBK.com, on the Live Experience App and on Twitter @WorldSBK.

Top 10 and Superpole 2 for PJ Jacobsen at MotorLand Aragón
Round 3 – Aragon
MotorLand Aragón, Spain
PJ Jacobsen and the Honda WorldSSP Team went straight into tomorrow’s third World Supersport Superpole 2 of the year, after finishing ninth in the combined times of today’s two free practice sessions at the MotorLand Aragón circuit in northern Spain.
With the start of the newly born FIM Europe Supersport Cup, which races together with World Supersport during the European rounds of the season, the already competitive field has seen an increase in the number of potential podium finishers. This translated in the top 12 riders from today’s two free practice sessions being covered by only seven tenths of a second.
Currently second in the Championship standings, Jacobsen worked with the team in order to find the best setup for his Honda CBR600RR, with a special focus on the rear-end of the bike. Despite being unable to improve his quickest lap-time and final position in the final minutes of free practice 2, the 22-year-old is nevertheless confident of his chances for a good qualifying tomorrow.

I’m happy that we were able to qualify for Superpole 2, it is really an important achievement ahead of tomorrow. You never know how things might end up if you have to make your way through the first session. Even in Thailand we were quite far from the top in terms of position, but then things changed a lot on Saturday. We’re all very close and it means that every little step forward can make a huge difference. We know we have to keep working on the set-up and we’re aware of what needs to be done. I am looking forward to tomorrow and hope to get a good qualifying position.

“We did well in the morning session and things looked quite good for the afternoon, but then we lost a little direction in terms of setup. Our biggest concern was to find more grip at the rear; what we tried didn’t work out so we had to go the opposite way. We went back to the morning settings but that proved not to be enough, so in the end we just didn’t have enough time to try anything else. Still, we’re in Superpole 2 and we know where to look, so definitely tomorrow will be different.”
