Village Idiots Win 8 Hours of Texas at Texas World Speedway with the CMRA

Village Idiots team riders Cory Burleson, Chris Headley, John Orchard, and Garet Tomlinson rode their Dunlop-shod Yamaha YZF-R6 to the Superbike and Overall Endurance wins in the third round of the Championship Endurance series, the 8 Hours of Texas Endurance Race this past Saturday, June 17, 2017, at Texas World Speedway.

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) Saturday schedule began with Mini and Lightweight Sprints, followed by the 8-Hour Championship Endurance, bringing 10 hours of racing action to College Station, Texas. Hot weather in the mid 90’s with a stiff breeze wind and heat index of 115 made for grueling riding conditions and fast lap times that were rough on tires on the 2.9-mile, 15-turn counter-clockwise course.

The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, with over 50 bikes on the grid in combined entries each for the 500 Superstock, Ultra LW GP, E Superbike, 500 Superbike and 500 Classic lightweight sprints.

Saturday’s standouts were young Cody Kitchens taking the wins in Formula 4, and Formula 5, on his Honda RS125, and then getting on his Kawasaki KLX110 and taking the wins in both North LA Lawn & Landscape Formula 8 races for four podiums total. Keith Hertell grabbed the top spots for the 500’s, taking the wins in 500 Superbike and 500 Superstock on his Honda CBR500R.

The 8-Hour Championship Endurance race had a 16 team turnout, with the endurance classes of Promomin/Repsol Oils Superbike, Antic Screen Printing – Formula 2, and Modern Classic represented. The start lights went out, and Just Can’t Quit Racing, LocoMotion, Pretty Hate Machine, and the Village Idiots were immediately battling for the lead. LocoMotion came out on top and turning their fastest lap of the race with a 1:49.344 and holding the lead at hour 1 with Just Can’t Quit Racing holding on to second and Village Idiots in third. During Hour 2, The Village Idiots took over the lead as LocoMotion had some mechanical issues and slid down the list. The Just Can’t Quit Racing team of JC Camacho, Dewayne Davis, Pete Martins, and Dustin Meador stayed solid in second on their Suzuki GSX-R1000, with Yamaha YZF-R6 mounted Buffington Homes Racing moving into third.

The Village Idiots continued to run a solid pace with the top three running order holding steady during hour 3 and 4 as LocoMotion worked their way back up the list. The Pretty Hate Machine team of Jesse Davis, Andy Galindo, Will Gruy, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede also had a problem with their Yamaha R1 and also had to start the climb back through the field. The EBR1190RX mounted In Torque We Trust team of Brandon Beals, Jim Dugger, Jorge Guerrero Jr, and Walt Sipp worked their way into fourth around The Skidmarks team of Hector Barreto, Enoc Garza, Steven Nedd, and Brian Prescott, who were holding on tight with their Yamaha YZF-R6 that was down to the 3 functioning gears.

During hour 5, Pretty Hate Machine worked their way back up into sixth, with The LocoMotion team of Brandon Altmeyer, Alonzo Contreras, Ryan Max Johnson, Hayden Schultz, and Mark Windham breathing on their tail from seventh aboard their Yamaha YZF-R6. The Village Idiots had stretched their lead to one lap and continued to hold the lead. As the race wore on, tires shagged and shelved as equipment and riders fatigued in the heat. Lap times continued to drop as hour 6 wound down.

During the final two hours, the leaders held on to their spots with steel fists, with the Village Idiots stretching their lead to two laps over the field and Pretty Hate Machine fighting their way back up into third around Buffington Homes Racing. The Village Idiots took the checkers at 7:18 pm with the Superbike Endurance and overall wins with 249 laps completed and a fastest lap of 1:49.334. Just Can’t Quit was next with second in Superbike Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:46.945 and 247 laps. Pretty Hate Machine was next, finishing third in Superbike Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:48.698, and completing 241 laps. In Torque We Trust crossed next, with fourth in Superbike Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:50.129 and 241 laps. The Buffington Homes Racing team of Chris Fields and Kenny Smith was next, taking first in Modern Classic Endurance and fifth overall, with a fastest lap of 1:50.141 and 239 laps. LocoMotion rounded out the top six, with fifth in Superbike Endurance and 238 laps.
