Your Pace or Mine? and Team Howard/Young Grab Top Spots In CMRA Opener At MSR Houston

The Your Pace or Mine? team of Jeromy Kumper, Braeden Ortt, and Gavin Williams brought home the Ultra LW GP and Overall Endurance wins in the opening round of the Ultra-Lightweight Endurance series, while the Ty Howard/Brandon Young team brought home the Heavyweight and Overall Team 60 wins this past Saturday, February 18 at MSR Houston.

The Central Motorcycle Roadracing Association (CMRA) began its 2017 season on Saturday with Mini and Lightweight Sprints, a 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight Endurance, and Team 60 race, bringing over 10 hours of racing action trackside in Angleton, Texas. Beautiful sunny weather in the mid 80’s made for great track conditions on the 2.38-mile full road course.

The Mini and Lightweight Sprint grids ran first, with over to 30 bikes on the grid in combined entries each for the 500 Superstock, Ultra LW GP, E Superbike, 500 Superbike and 500 Classic lightweight sprints.

A total of 36 teams signed up for the 6-Hour Ultra-Lightweight endurance race, with the endurance classes of Von Hertell Racing Services – 500 Superstock, 500 Classic, Ultra-Lightweight GP, Road & Track Suspension – E Superstock, and Formula 4 represented, and ran on the 2.38-mile long course. As the teams lined up for the start, defending Number One plate holder Hate the Game team of Thomas Anderson, Andy Galindo, Alan Phillips, and David Tiede on their Honda RVF400 squared off against the MiniMotion team of Chris Headley, Jeff Hughes, Ryan Max Johnson, and John Orchard aboard their Honda CBR500R, with the Your Pace or Mine? and MotoBros teams fielding Yamaha YZF-R3s.

The start lights went out, and Hate the Game got out in front, followed by MiniMotion, MotoBros, and Your Pace or Mine?. The field of competitors was very large, and about 20 minutes into the first leg, a couple of bikes came together and went down, bringing out the first red flag. As the teams gridded up for the restart, strategies were changed for fueling and pit stops. Heading into Hour Two, MiniMotion took over the lead, as Your Pace or Mine? slid by Hate the Game for second, and MotoBros held on to fourth. Another red flag was brought out, and this one lasted about 25 minutes, burning the rest of the hour as the teams got ready to restart. During Hour Three going into Four, MiniMotion held their lead, with Your Pace or Mine? in second, Hate the Game in third, and Lawpup Racing moved up into fourth.

Good battles shaped up all the way to the back of the grid, as more teams made a run for the top ten. During Hour Five, the Heavy Lightweights team of Dewayne Davis, Sean Gurevich, Ty Howard, and Carl Price, and the KNYamaha.com team of Shannon Ball, Dylan Deutschlander, and Cooper McDonald, both on Yamaha YZF-R3s, took over fourth and fifth, knocking MotoBros back to sixth.

In Hour Five, MiniMotion came under fire from KNYamaha.com and Your Pace or Mine?, with a tip over costing them the lead, while Your Pace or Mine? got around KNYamaha.com to take over the lead and run with it. The 212 Decals team of Dirk Anderson, Paul Bradley, Rodrigo DaCunha, and Yorke Oldfather, riding a Yamaha YZF-R3, worked up into the top six and held on.

During the final hour, Your Pace or Mine? stretched their lead to one lap over the rest of the field, taking the checkers for the Ultra LW GP Endurance and overall wins with a fastest lap of 1:48.646 and completing 138 laps. KNYamaha.com crossed the line second in Ultra LW GP Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:49.335 and 137 laps. Team Heavy Lightweights crossed next, grabbing third in Ultra LW GP Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:49.412 and turning 136 laps. The MotoBros team of Cory Burleson, Isaiah Burleson, and Craig Thomson followed, with fourth in Ultra LW GP Endurance and overall, with a fastest lap of 1:48.258 and turning 134 laps. 212 Decals was next, with fifth in Ultra LW GP Endurance and overall, a fastest time of 1:53.724 and 133 laps. MiniMotion rounded out the top six, with first in Von Hertell Racing Services – 500 Superstock Endurance and sixth overall, with a fastest lap of 1:48.531, and completing 132 laps

The final race of the day was the Race Tire Service/Dunlop – Team 60 race, and the popular LeMans-style start was replaced with a gridded start for the 34 teams entered, with the classes of Heavyweight, Middleweight, and Lightweight represented.

The lights went out and the action was fierce, with the Howard/Young team battling the Camacho/Thornton team for the lead with the Burleson/Montgomery team and Caruso/Tomlinson team hot on their heels. The Doolan/Galindo and Martins/Mears teams fought through traffic to vie for the top spots. About 20 minutes into the first leg, a crash brought out the red flag, and safety team raced against daylight to get the track cleaned for the restart. When the course was cleared, the rider and transponder swap was made in the pits, and a mad dash to regain positions was made as the race restart. With twilight gathering, the second leg was red flagged after approximately seven laps due to limited visibility to the end the race.

Howard/Young took the Heavyweight and overall win, Camacho/Thornton took second in Heavyweight and second overall. Burleson/Montgomery edged Caruso/Tomlinson for third in Heavyweight and third in overall, followed by Doolan/Galindo for fourth overall and the win in Middleweight. Martins/Mears crossed next with fifth in Heavyweight, and sixth overall.
