TOOELE VALLEY, UTAH (August 8, 2008) “” MotoGP star Colin Edwards made his first-ever visit to Miller Motorsports Park on Thursday, August 7, and was very impressed with the facility. Edwards, affectionately known as “The Texas Tornado,” is a two-time FIM World Superbike Champion (2000, 2002) who has been competing in the FIM MotoGP Championship since 2003. He currently rides for the Tech 3 Yamaha team and is sixth in the championship standings after 11 of 18 rounds. Making his first visit to Miller Motorsports Park as part of a private event, Edwards was effusive in his praise for the 4.5-mile Full Course. “My first impression is, honestly, it’s fantastic,” he said. “It would take a while to learn the whole track, being as it’s quite lengthy. I just did one lap around the whole track. But it’s great, you know? I’d love to come race here.” The affable Texan said he liked the fact that the track was very technical. “There are quite a few blind entries,” he said. “That’s good, though; the more technical aspects you have in a racetrack, the better. If you can see every corner coming in, then it’s pretty easy to learn. But I’ve always liked the off-camber, the little bit of elevation and blind corners; it’s great.” The facility itself impressed Edwards as much as the track. “It’s real impressive coming to a track in the U.S. that has a set-up like this,” he said. “As a facility racetrack, garages, paddock, access for sure, it’s top-notch. It seems like I’m kind of asking the question, ‘Why don’t we have a Grand Prix here?’ It just seems like a natural fit, if you ask me.” Although it is unlikely, Edwards said that if MotoGP ever came to Miller Motorsports Park, he would prefer the Full Course be used rather than the faster, 3.06-mile Outer Course. “For Grand Prix riders, I would say [use] the long track, 100 percent,” he said. “If you’re dealing with the best riders in the world, why not make them work the hardest? If they’re going to have to learn something, you might as well have them learn all of it.” Edwards’ next race will be the Cardion AB Grand Prix Ceske Republic, at the Brno Circuit in the Czech Republic, over the weekend of August 16-17. Local motorcycle fans may not have a MotoGP race on the horizon, but there is lots of great two-wheeled action coming up in the next few weeks. Round 5 of both the Honda Presents the Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains and the Plaza Cycle Utah Supermoto Championship will take place over the weekend of August 15-17, and the weekend of September 5-7 will bring our annual Cycle Fest, including the AMA XTRM Supermoto Championship along with the AHRMA Bonneville Vintage Grand Prix and Round 6 of both the Honda Presents the Plaza Cycle Masters of the Mountains and the Plaza Cycle Utah Supermoto Championship.
