Rockstar Makita Suzuki’s Blake Young will miss the AMA Pro National Guard Superbike event scheduled for July 16-18 at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course and possibly the July 23-25 round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca July 23-25 due to a compression fracture of his L1 vertebra, which he suffered in a crash during testing June 9 at Barber Motorsports Park. “It happened on like the fifth lap of the test,” Young told Roadracingworld.com Monday evening. “I highsided coming out of the museum turn, and when I landed, I landed back-first. My back hurt, but it didn’t feel like I broke anything. I just felt really sore, like I kind of got bruised. I went back out on my other bike, rode the rest of the day and all of the next, but I kept telling Peter [Doyle, his Crew Chief], ‘I don’t feel 100%. I think I could go faster if I could get off the bike.’ But I just felt really stiff on the bike.” When the pain continued after the test, Young sought medical attention and the fracture was discovered. “As of right now I think I’m going to miss Ohio,” said Young, “and I’ll know more then when I get another CT scan done around that time. They want to see if the bone is healing, because there’s no surgery or anything they can do for it. It just needs some rest. Bed rest is the doctor’s orders.” Young said he is currently in Southern California receiving care from noted orthopedic surgeon and avid track day rider Dr. Thomas Bryan, who has placed him in a removable cast to protect his fracture, but Young plans to return to his home in Wisconsin Tuesday. Young is currently fourth in the AMA Pro National Guard Superbike point standings with 197 points, 32 behind his teammate and Championship leader Tommy Hayden.
