AFM Round 7 at Thunderhill
At Thunderhill Raceway last weekend (September 10-11), Ricky Corey took his second Bay Area Riders Forum Formula Pacific win on the season on his Corey and Sons Construction Yamaha R1. Lenny Hale finished second in his second weekend on an EDR Performance GSX-R1000, with Chris Siglin third on a B.A.R.F. Racing / Fastline Cycles BMW S1000RR. Corey’s win came after a troublesome weekend at the last rounds Formula Pacific double header, where mechanical problems forced him to withdraw from one race, putting him on an unfamiliar borrowed bike for the other. Siglin’s third place finish put him in a tie for the lead of the Formula Pacific points standings with James Randolph.
“The good times have to come to and end, and you can’t win them all,” said Siglin, in reference to his Formula Pacific win streak coming to an end. “I have to be realistic about it right now – it’s the end of the season, and I have to look at the bigger picture. I knew Ricky was going to be right up there, no doubt. It was good to see Lenny up there, I don’t know if he set the track record or not, but we’ll see. I wanted to thank Fastline – Alex, Ray, and all of the, I really appreciate all of the hard work, we had a really rough week. CT Racing Pirelli tires, they held up really great today, we can’t thank those guys enough for standing behind us.
Hale’s continued to impress on an open class bike, scoring his second place finish in just his second AFM event on an EDR Performance GSX-R1000.
“I thought for a couple of laps I could do it, but then I started feeling the heat,” state Hale, when asked about his attempt to catch the race leader. “I knew I had a couple more races to go, so I just started cruising.”
Corey’s win was his second of the season on his Dunlop-shod Yamaha, moving him into third in the Formula Pacific points standings.
“The bike was quite amazing this weekend, it just handled… amazingly!” Corey stated from the winner’s circle. “It’s a little down on power and torque, but it made up for it on cornering and braking ability. It’s an awesome bike all around, and it was an awesome race. I got out there with Siglin on the start, and I knew I couldn’t let him get away. I realized I had the pace, and was able to overtake him on the brakes into Turn 9. I laid down some good, hard laps, looked back and saw a gap, so I started pacing myself. Looked back again two laps later and I thought I saw Lenny, so I got back on it to stay ahead of him. It definitely worked out.”
The last round of the 2011 season is scheduled to take place on October 1-2 at Thunderhill Raceway.
