AMA Sanctioned ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire, Autobahn Country Club, Joliet, Illinois
West, Farrell and Fogg Taste Victory at Autobahn
August 14, Joliet, IL – The AMA sanctioned ASRA Sprint Series presented by Pirelli Tire returned to the Autobahn Country Club after a 10 year hiatus and a new cast of characters took to the North Course with enthusiasm. The 1.46 mile 9-turn course proved challenging in the wet/dry conditions during Saturday’s qualifying but with a fully dry course for Sunday, it was nothing but wide open racing for the riders.
The ASRA Superstock class featured the two fastest riders from the ASRA event at Road America facing off again in a 9-lap dash for the cash. The green flag flew and Jason Farrell did what he needed to by taking the holeshot on his Kawasaki ZX-6R but couldn’t hang on as Cory West used the Scheibe Racing Hayes Brakes BMW S1000RR like a fine instrument and swept into the lead before the finish of lap one, then never looked back.
Despite breaking his earlier lap record with 1:03.544, Farrell was no match for West who set a new absolute motorcycle track record with a 1:02.820 on the same lap. Realizing he was out-gunned, Farrell slowed slightly to save his Pirelli-shod ZX-6R for the ASRA SportBike race coming up later. Without having to worry about equipment, West continued to run sub-1:03 laps all the way to the checkered flag. On the podium it was West in first, Farrell in second and Stefan “Germany” Dolipski taking a well-deserved third place on his BMW S1000RR after battling Jeff Purk on a Ducati 1200 for the entire event. The win brings West to within 9 points of David Loikits, the Championship leader, with two races to go.
The runner-up finish in SuperStock was motivation for Jason Farrell, and his Farrell Performance Kawasaki 636 ZX-6R took him to a solid win in ASRA SportBike over his Farrell Performance teammate Josh Rom, also on a ZX-6R. Third position went to last year’s ASRA Amateur SportBike Champion Mark Rhoades on another Farrell Performance Kawasaki ZX-6R. While Farrell had to give up the absolute track record, he still secured the ASRA SportBike record with a 1:05.899, solidifying his reputation one of the fastest riders to race with ASRA. However, Mark Heckles continues to hold a solid grip on the 2016 ASRA SportBike Championship with a 41-point led after 6 rounds.
Working towards his second consecutive ASRA ThunderBike Championship, it was Douglas Fogg taking the win in ThunderBike and improving his point lead to 41 points with 2 rounds left in 2016.
For the Amateur classes it was Piotr Urlinski with the win in SuperStock, Charles Pipke winning in SportBike and Tim Koebert taking the win in ThunderBike
Next race for the AMA-sanctioned ASRA Sprint Series Presented by Pirelli Tire is September 24-25, 2016 at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in South Beloit, Illinois.
