The Central Roadracing Association kicked off its 45th anniversary season on Brainerd International Raceway’s 2.5 mile Competition Course on the May 8-10 weekend.

The weekend challenged racers with mixed weather conditions and a Trophy Dash format, featuring 8 lap sprints and 18 lap trophy dashes. Saturday’s Supersport sprints and Trophy dashes were run in ideal sunny conditions, while Sunday’s Superbike and GP sprints saw intermittent rain and temperatures under 50°F that left racers guessing between DOT and rain tires. Twenty Four rookies made up the first New Rider class of the 2015 season, and went on to take multiple top 5 novice finishes over the weekend.

The Ultralight sprints featured one of the clubs most anticipated motorcycles, as veteran Bob Barton debuted his KTM powered Kramer HKR-EVO2. Barton claimed Kramer’s first victory on American soil on Saturday, and Trevor Treviranus took his first three expert class wins in Sunday’s sprints and the GP1 trophy dash. Sam Miller, Brad Zajic, and Jesse Nelson took wins in the Ninja 250 class, with Brad Zajic riding with the #154 number plate in memory of Tyson Berger, who passed away racing at BIR in 2001.

Reigning club champion Christian Schmidt maintained his championship winning form, taking Saturday’s Lightweight Supersport win on his Suzuki SV650, and the GP2 Expert Trophy dash on his Yamaha R5 GP bike. Jon Champ was on pace all weekend, taking the Lightweight Superbike and GP victories, while novice Aaron Foss swept the novice lightweight sprints and GP2 trophy dash.

Scott Stall set the pace in Saturday’s Middleweight and Heavyweight sprints, beating the field with leads over 15 seconds. Kyle Ohnsorg and Brian Heibeisen closed out the expert podiums, and Chase Sellers finished fourth in the Heavyweight Supersport sprint on a freshly rebuilt Suzuki GSXR 750 after an acrobatic crash in Friday practice. Justin Ebnet took three wins in Sunday’s wet conditions, and Harry Jensen held off Scott Stall in Expert Superbike Middleweight to get his first expert class win. Scott Masterton, Mark Grey, and Mark Praska battled all weekend to split the Novice class Heavyweight and Middleweight wins.

Jordan Imrie won the Superbike and GP Unlimited sprints on his Ducati 1198 Panigale, as well as the Supertwin sprint. Scott Stall and Shane Keaveny continued their Unlimited class rivalry during the Supersport Unlimited sprint, with Keaveny taking the win after a Turn 3 pass. The weekend also marked the first ever CRA Unlimited novice sprints, giving Nick Johnson and Matthew Nardo the class’ first wins.

The club will hold a Double Sprint format race weekend on June 12-14 on the BIR Competition Course. Preregistration for this event is available starting on May 23. This will be the first shared event held with the CCS in recent history, so grids are expected to be filled quickly. For more information on the CRA, please contact [email protected].
