TEAM KA-BOOM WINS CRA 3 HOUR ENDURANCE

The Central Roadracing Association (CRA) held its penultimate round over August 3-5 on Brainerd International Raceway’s 13-turn, 2.5-mile Competition Course. The club held its second three-hour endurance race on the BIR’s “short course,” as well as a full complement of supersport, superbike, and grand prix sprints.

A total of 19 teams in the GP2, GP3, and GP4 classes ran multiple bikes (relay race style) in Saturday’s 3-hour race, which was red flagged after 2 hours and 37 minutes of racing. Club veterans Aaron Anderson, Tony Kasper, and Shane Keaveny (Team Ka-Boom) took the overall win with 91 laps riding Suzuki GSX-R750 and GSX-R1000 and Honda CBR1000RR GP4 machines. Kaleb DeKeyrel, Shane Fletcher, and Drew See (Team Worldwide Welding & Machining) came in second with 90 laps on their Yamaha YZF-R6 GP3 bike, followed by the third place team of Chase Sellers and Jesse Nelson (Stimulus Package) on their Yamaha YZF-R6. Top honors in the GP2 category went to Eric Fox, Jon Champ, and Jay Hoffman (Team Lightweights) finishing 82 laps on a combination of Ducati 900SS and Suzuki SV650s.

Riding a borrowed Ducati 848, AMA Pro racer Jake Zemke gridded up with the Middleweight Experts for the Supersport and Superbike sprints. After only six laps of practice, he quickly found the frontrunners, getting second- and fourth-place finishes.

Middleweight Supersport race winner Shane Fletcher recalled, “With Zemke racing we were thinking I would be racing for 2nd. During the Middleweight Supersport race I got a poor start and ended up in 3rd, but when [Scott] Stall and [Kaleb] DeKeyrel went down in corner three on the start, I thought I could cruise for an easy W. Wrong. On lap four I heard a twin, looked back and Jake was right behind. I put together three hard laps on my R6 and opened up a gap for the win.”

Fletcher went on to win the Middleweight Supersport and Grand Prix sprints, as well as the Heavyweight Grand Prix sprint. Fletcher left the weekend with a 156 point lead in the Expert class championship.

Scott Stall also took three wins in the Heavyweight Superbike and Supersport, and Middleweight Superbike sprints. 15-year-old Kaleb DeKeyrel regularly put his Yamaha YZF-R6 on the podium and finished the weekend with a last-lap pass on Shane Keaveny, who rode a Honda CBR1000RR, in the Unlimited Grand Prix race. DeKeyrel’s younger brother Mason DeKeyrel, a novice racer, also impressed, beating the Novice and Expert Ultralight fields in two sprints on his Moriwaki 250.

Jon Champ and Kyle Knutson split wins in the Expert Lightweight category, and Kenneth Earl managed a second-place finish in his second weekend in the Lightweight ranks. Bryant Soberg swept the three EX250 races, battling with Mark Dargis and reigning club champion Christian Schmidt.

In the Novice categories, Brandon Soine continued his campaign for the championship, sweeping the Heavyweight sprints and taking a win in the Ultralight category. Soine had to settle for second in the Middleweight sprints behind Jordan Imrie’s Ducati 848.

The CRA’s season-closer will take place from September 14-16 on BIR’s Donnybrook Course, where the club will hold its annual five-hour endurance race.
