CVMA Racing Round 4 2020/2021 Winter Series

Racers in record numbers came out to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway for the most highly attended round of the CVMA 2020/2021 season, so far. With most racing clubs hunkered down for the winter, CVMA has become a popular destination for riders looking to prepare for the upcoming race season.

CVMA added a new racing class for American Twins motorcycles for this event and the club had a few Harley-Davidson cruisers racing in their own class.

Saturday – Saturday saw lap records falling like dominos all day long.

The first race of the day started things off with a bang as Jayson Uribe set a new lap record for the Open Supersport class in the clockwise racing direction of 1:45.054. Uribe won the race with Michael Gilbert and Nicholas Ciling rounding out the podium positions in second and third, respectively.

Lap records continued to fall later in the day as Richie Escalante set a new record in the Formula Middleweight race turning a 1:45.873 lap time. This new lap recorded bettered the previous record set by Escalante back in 2018 by about one second. Unfortunately, Escalante crashed later in the race, as did Sean Dylan Kelly, handing the win to Rennie Scaysbrook. Scaysbrook was riding one of the new model Kramer GP2-890R motorcycles. Grant Boldt and Tyler Olmstead rounded out the podium positions in second and third, respectively.

Boldt set a new lap record in the Formula 40 Middleweight race turning a 1:50.945 lap time and winning the race. David Kolb and Jose Revelo finished second and third, respectively.

David “Aussie Dave” Anthony set another new lap record in the Formula Open class, turning a 1:43.908 on his first flying lap of the 12^th race of the day. Uribe and Gilbert finished second and third, respectively, in that race.

Sunday – Lap records continued to drop Sunday morning when Anthony, riding his Fly Racing Suzuki GSX-R1000 superbike, reset the competition track record lap time (in the clockwise direction) turning a 1:43.382 in the first race of the day. Anthony’s lap time also set a new lap record for the Formula Open class. Uribe finished second in that race with Gilbert in third.

In the very next race, Andy DiBrino set a new lap record in the Formula 2 class, turning a 1:51.210 lap time while riding a Kramer HKR EVO2 R motorcycle. Ralph Staropoli finished second and Ryan Fritz third in that race.

Escalante kept the lap-record streak rolling by lowering a record he already held with a new lap record of 1:46.229 in the third race of the day, SuperSport Middleweight. Olmstead finished second and Boldt was third.

In the CVMA Shootout, Uribe got the holeshot and ran at the front for the first few laps with Anthony running second. Anthony turned a 1:42.888 lap time on the third lap of the race, good enough to lower the clockwise track record and CVMA Shootout lap record. On lap five, Anthony passed Uribe for the lead and set sail at the front to take the win. Uribe finished second, Gilbert was third, Escalante got fourth, and Kelly rounded out the top five.

Later in the day, Mark Price set a new lap record for the Formula 40 ULW class, turning a 1:56.914 lap time. In that same race, DiBrino set a new lap record for the Formula Twins class, turning a 1:51.392 lap time.

CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.
