FONG, ANTHONY AND COLLINS SET NEW LAP RECORDS AT CHUCKWALLA VALLEY RACEWAY DURING MID-WINTER RACING

Bobby Fong Lowers CVMA Shootout Record, David Anthony lowers Formula Open class record, Canadian youth Torin Collins sets new class record for UltraLightweight Shootout.

It’s that time of the year again, when racers from across the country migrate to Desert Center, CA, to compete with Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association and ready themselves for the season ahead. On February 23 and 24 CVMA held Round Five of its Winter Series, and the grids were full and full of talent. From a former Canadian National Mini Road Racing champion to current MotoAmerica professionals, there was no shortage of riders looking to sharpen their skills and dial in their bikes.

Bobby Fong, who will be racing on the Hudson Motorcycle’s MotoAmerica Motul Superbike team for 2018, spent the weekend getting familiar with his new Yamaha YZF-R1. He went head-to-head with MotoAmerica racer David Anthony in several classes, putting on a tremendous show where the two veterans lowered lap records with nearly every revolution of the 2.7-mile circuit.

Anthony maintained the upper hand in the Formula Open classes both days, taking the win and setting a new lap record of 1:45.408 on his Kawasaki ZX-10R in Sunday’s sprint. In the weekend’s big race, the 10-lap Shootout presented by TrackDaz and SoCal Trackdays, Fong and Anthony were on a tear. The two were consistently lapping the track in the high 44s, with Fong throwing down a 1:44.869 on the penultimate lap. The effort and strain proved too much, however, and Fong crashed out of the lead at the end of the race, handing the win to Anthony.

Canadian youth-racer Torin Collins cleaned house in the Ultralightweight Shootout races on his Moriwaki MD250H. He secured two wins and a new lap record of 1:56.500. Toby Khamsouk took the win in Saturday’s 350 Supersport race on his Yamaha YZF-R3, leading Jason Madama and Cory Ventura to the checkered flag. On Sunday Madama took the upper hand on his YZF-R3, leading the race flag-to-flag with precise riding and fast laps. Khamsouk worked his way up from fourth to second position in Sunday’s race, finishing behind Madama by 4 seconds. Cody Newman took third on his YZF-R3.

Tired of sitting around this winter? Road trip to SoCal and enjoy some sunshine and competition with one of the best clubs in the country. Racing resumes at Chuckwalla on March 31, 2018. CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.

Additionally, CVMA offers free reciprocity as a means of encouraging racers from other clubs to come out and compete. Log on to www.cvmaracing.com for more information.

NEW TRACK, NO PROBLEM: WEIR EVERYWHERE RACING’S TRAVIS WYMAN SCORES TWO PODIUMS IN SECOND COMPETITIVE OUTING

Impressive teamwork helps Wyman finish within the top five in five CVMA Winter Series races

DESERT CENTER, Cali. – In only their second weekend of racing, MotoAmerica veteran Travis Wyman and Weir Everywhere Racing showed strong pace and consistent improvement at this past weekend’s Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association Winter Series event. Wyman was able to put the Weir Everywhere Racing BMW S1000RR on the podium twice while finishing no lower than fifth in all five races the team entered.

Despite having limited practice time on a track Wyman had only raced in the opposite direction, Wyman’s lap times began dropping almost immediately on Saturday. During Saturday’s racing action, Wyman piloted the Weir Everywhere Racing BMW to a third-place finish in the SuperSport Open Expert class. In the four-lap Formula Open class race, Wyman started last on the grid and battled through 10 riders to score a fifth-place finish. Working with Crew Chief Steve Weir and Lenny Albin from K-Tech Suspension, Wyman consistently dropped his lap times by nearly a second every time he hit the track Saturday.

On Sunday, Wyman continued working closely with his team and saw similar improvements in his lap times. Wyman finished fourth in Sunday’s SuperSport Open Expert class race, as well as the 10-lap CVMA Shootout. In Formula Open, Wyman rounded out the day by battling through the field to take a hard-fought second-place. Wyman found himself continuing to drop his lap times by almost a second per lap on Sunday.

Additional information concerning Wyman/Weir Everywhere Racing’s plans for the 2018 season will be announced soon.

Travis Wyman, Rider for Weir Everywhere Racing, said, “I am very pleased with the results the team and I were able to achieve this weekend. I only got six laps of practice in on Saturday morning, and I had never raced this circuit clockwise before. Despite being at a disadvantage to our competition, the team really came together and showed what we are capable of. We made consistent progress every time we went out on track. Steve’s knowledge of the bike and Lenny Albin’s suspension expertise really helped us get the bike dialed in. For only having two weekends of racing under our belt, I could not be happier with how far the team has come. I also want to give a big shout out to my dad, Bob Wyman, who flew out here from Rochester, N.Y. to help us out this weekend. I am really looking forward to continuing to develop this BMW S1000RR, and am looking forward to announcing our plans for the 2018 season very soon.”

Steve Weir, Crew Chief for Weir Everywhere Racing, said, “It was another amazing weekend with Travis and the team. We were able to fulfill all the goals I set out for us this weekend, thanks to a maximum effort from everyone involved. That kind of cohesiveness allowed us to produce big results this weekend within a minimal time frame. In the end, we are walking away with two podiums, BMW Race Contingency winnings and a team that is truly realizing its potential. We have also obtained some new sponsors that really added to our package this weekend. SBS is providing some of the most heat-friendly brake pads I have ever encountered, and Evol Technology jumped in to produce a one-off set of rear sets for our BMW S1000RR. We will continue working with Evol Technology to develop their rear sets throughout the 2018 season. We are looking forward to releasing more information about our 2018 program in the very near future.”
