CVMA Racing Round 6 2021/2022 Winter Series

With the CVMA season nearing its end, Round 6 [held March 26-27 at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, in Desert Center, California] was very well attended. Riders from all over the country converged on the California desert racetrack for some of the most competitive racing in the nation. The weekend started off under cloudy skies on Saturday which enabled riders to turn some incredibly fast lap times.

During qualifying, Jayden Fernandez was fastest on an Ultra Lightweight class bike turning a 1:53.923 lap time. Justin Bordonaro was the fastest qualifier on a Lightweight class bike with a 1:51.683 lap time and Rocco Landers was the fastest Middleweight rider with a 1:46.246 lap time. Michael Gilbert was fastest of all while riding his Open class bike turning a 1:43.575 lap time.

Saturday

The highlight from Saturday’s races was the battle for the Formula Middleweight race win. Chad Lewin got a great jump from the second row of the grid to lead the first lap with a gap over the second place rider, Rocco Landers. Liam Grant and Alejandro Thermiotis ran third and forth respectively  and ran nose to tail the entire race. Late in the race, Landers was able to close down the gap to Lewin. When the crossed start finish to begin the final lap, Rocco was right behind Chad. On the last lap Landers was able to get a better drive onto the back straight and pass Lewin on the brakes into turn 10. Lewin was right behind Landers entering turn three but pressed a little too hard and lost the front. Landers took the win with Grant and Thermiotis rounding out the podium.

Sunday

Sunday morning started off with a bang when Justin Bordonaro set a new lap record in the first race of the day. Bordonaro turned a 1:50.876 setting a new lap record for the Formula Twins class. Michael Gilbert also set a new lap record for the SuperSport Open class, turning a 1:43.515 lap time.

In the Open Shootout, Michael Gilbert got the hole shot and quickly developed a gap to the chasing pack of riders. Behind Gilbert, Toby Khamsouk, Anthony Norton and Rocco Landers (riding a 600cc bike) were in a battle for the podium. Norton was able to work his way into second position and Landers into third by the half way point. In the end, Gilbert won the race with Norton finishing second ahead of Landers in third.

In the Ultra Lightweight Shootout, Owen Williams got the hole shot and lead the first few laps, but lost the front in turn 15 and crashed out of the race. With Williams out, Jayden Fernandez took over the lead and was never challenged. Quinn Swift and Geoffrey Marshall ran  nose to tail in second and third respectively for the entire race and finished in that order. Fernandez took the win with Swift and Marshall rounding out the podium.

The Supersport Shootout was a barn burner with Alejandro Thermiotis getting the hole shot at the start. Rocco Landers made a quick pass on the first lap to take the lead. Thermiotis made a mistake on the second lap and fell out of the top three handing second position to Chad Lewin. Liam Grant and Rennie Scaysbrook had a race long battle, trading positions several times for the final spot on the podium. At the end, Landers took the win with Lewin and Grant on the podium.
