RECORD LAP TIMES AND RECORD TURNOUT AT CVMA ROUND 5
Oleg Pianykh, Andy DiBrino, and Gray Pham set new track records, guest appearances by Josh Herrin, Bryce Prince, Brandon Paasch, and other pros prepping for the upcoming MotoAmerica season.
Chuckwalla Valley Motorcycle Association kicked off the fifth round of its 2016-17 Winter Series at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in Desert Center, CA, February 25-26, 2017, and the event saw the newly expanded paddock area packed with racers from all over the country. Registration was flooded with 172 riders—a record for the season—and there were 16 new racers who graduated from Friday’s New Racer School hosted by TrackDaz.
As is typical for California in mid-winter, the weather was perfect. As Scott Russell, aka “Mr. Daytona” put it as he basked in the sun watching the SuperSport Open race, “If this is winter, sign me up!”
One rider that was a big fan of the weather was 16-year-old Gray Pham, who credits the idyllic racing conditions with his record-setting performance in Sunday’s 350 Supersport race. “Conditions were near perfect this weekend,” says the straight-A student. “The track was really grippy and the competition was high so I was able to push hard. We’ve been working to find a good set-up on my MotoTriad KTM RC390, and it all came together this weekend and I was able to put down a fast lap.”
Pham’s 1:58.461 lap time will go down in the history books, and was fast enough to put him nearly 12 seconds ahead of second-place finisher Chris Lillegard by the time the checkered flag dropped. Pham won Saturday’s 350 Supersport race, as well as Saturday and Sunday’s Ultralightweight Shootout races.
At the other end of the displacement spectrum Oleg Pianykh, a CVMA regular from Salt Lake City, Utah, also set a new track record of 1:47.306 in Sunday’s 10-lap Shootout race aboard his Moto Station Yamaha YZF-R1.
Also from out of town, Andy DiBrino from Oregon came down to win some races, and scored a new lap record in Motorsport Exotica Supersport Open with a 1:46.770 aboard his EDR Yamaha YZF-R1. He won that race both days, along with Saturday’s Formula Open Race.
With MotoAmerica pros Bryce Prince and Benny Solis at the pointy end of the grid, plus former Daytona 200 winner and 2016 MotoAmerica Superstock 1000 Champion Josh Herrin making a surprise appearance, “the Shootout race was one of the most intense and fun races I have been involved in,” says Pianykh.
“I think I was 5th or 6th on the first lap and I battled my way to the lead with 3 laps to go. I was leading the last lap and Josh tried to put it on the inside of me in turn 1, I didn’t want to give up position so I held my line. Unfortunately he ended up hitting me pretty hard and I crashed. I actually felt our pace was slow because we all kept on passing each other but I ended up setting a new class record in that race so that was cool,” says Pianykh. “I’ve been getting some help from [Jason] Pridmore and I think it’s helping my riding.”
With Pianykh’s last-lap crash and Herrin pulling off the track before the checkered flag, the win went to Benny Solis the win on his Honda CBR600R, with Bryce Prince and Jody Barry rounding out the podium.
Racing resumes at Chuckwalla on March 25-26, so if you’re sick of the cold, round up your buddies, pack the truck, and drive on down to Desert Center.
CVMA offers two full days of racing every race weekend and also includes Saturday qualifying for grid position in all classes, amateur and expert, as well as a wide variety of classes to choose from.
