Kelsey Sweeps Again: Five Races, Five Wins and Sets Another Track Record at NOLA Circuit with CMRA
Danny Kelsey again swept his races, entering five and taking all five wins while setting a new lap record with his two Pirelli-shod Suzuki GSX-Rs during CMRA’s round five sprint event on Sunday, June 16, 2013 at the NOLA Motorsports Park course in Avondale, Louisiana. This was CMRA’s first event at the 2.75-mile, 16-turn course, and with over 583 sprint race entries total, promised to be a good one. 90-degree temperatures, very high humidity and the threat of thunderstorms in the afternoon created interesting riding conditions. Despite the heat and another threat of heavy rain, visors clicked down and it was time for some racing.
Kelsey rode his Suzuki GSX-R1000 to the win in the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert, RaceworX A Superstock Expert, and HighPerformanceCrew.com A Superbike Expert classes. He took the wins in B Superbike Expert and TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert on his GSX-R750. Kelsey also had a win going into this weekend when he and his wife Kayla welcomed their new baby girl, Madison, on Monday night.
In Sunday’s eight lap headline race, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation/P1 Racing Formula 1 Expert, Kelsey lined up against Ty Howard and it was looking to be another great battle between the two powerhouses. When the flag dropped, they shot out ahead of the rest of the grid, Kelsey in front and Howard right on his tail section, setting up for a very good race. Going into turn four on the first lap, Howard lost his front end and crashed, bringing out a red flag to stop the race. The field re-gridded for a full restart, but Howard was unable to make the grid.
Kelsey retook the start, again pulling ahead of the field, with William Guthrie on a BMW S1000RR and Brandon Altmeyer going after him. Kelsey was determined and threw down a commanding fastest lap of 1:44.549, setting the CMRA lap record at the new track. Guthrie also put down an impressive fastest lap of 1:45.669, but couldn’t quite catch Kelsey. Guthrie firmly held off Altmeyer and his Suzuki GSX-R600, keeping him in third place. Kelsey put his head down and just rode, grabbing the checkers for the win 23 seconds ahead of Guthrie, leaving him with second place. Altmeyer held onto third, with Peyton Inge, Mark Windham, John Fitzsimmons, Matt Vastine, Dolph McVicker, Bobby Davies, and Sean Gurevich rounding out the top 10 on a 20-bike grid.
Brandon Altmeyer won the $100 P1 Racing cash purse for riding the first 600 across the finish line during the Formula 1 race. Bringing awareness to finding a cure for Breast Cancer is an important aspect of this race and a donation is made by the CMRA to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each entry in the race. Gridding for the race is done by qualifying earlier in the day. The qualifying session for the race is sponsored by 212Decals.com and Altmeyer, Guthrie and Kelsey all received a share of the $150 cash purse.
Just after the Formula 1 race and podium concluded with race 11 heading onto the track, the skies opened up for a brief but heavy rain, making for full wet conditions. Blowers were brought out to clear some two inch deep puddles, causing a delay and shortening the races to five laps each, while track conditions steadily improved and dried out.
Conner Blevins and Travis Ohge dodged the rain successfully and got two podiums each. Blevins won South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert, and took second in TrackTactics Track Days B Superstock Expert and B Superbike Expert on his Kawasaki ZX-6R.
Ohge, aboard his Suzuki GSX-R600 took the win in C Superbike Expert and second in South Central Race Center C Superstock Expert, completing his second race just before the skies opened up again.
Once again, between races 15 and 16, the rain came down hard, with a threat of lightning, so there was an additional delay, and the track went to full wet conditions for the remainder of the race schedule.
Top Novice for the weekend was Chris Hamlett, with six wins and a second place finish for seven total podiums with his Suzuki GSX-R600. Hamlett grabbed the wins in Moto Liberty C Superstock Novice, House of Paint Designs C Superbike Novice, Lone Star Track Days B Superstock Novice, North Texas Superbikes B Superbike Novice, North Texas Superbikes A Superbike Novice, Road & Track Suspension Formula 1 Novice, and second place in OnRoad OffRoad Suspension A Superstock Novice.
