A test on a Ducati GP07 800cc MotoGP racebike September 11-12 at Mugello, in Italy, may result in a full-time ride in 2008 for Chaz Davies, but it may also end up hindering him during the AMA season finale this weekend at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Working with a crew composed of development team mechanics and some mechanics from Ducati’s various MotoGP race teams, Davies said he lapped the 3.259-mile Italian circuit within “six or seven tenths of a second” of the fastest lap time turned by Loris Capirossi (1:50.482), who finished seventh, in the Italian Grand Prix. (Casey Stoner finished fourth in the race, but Capirossi turned a faster single lap time.) Late on the second, day of the test however, Davies crashed. “I just lost the rear and it put me down,” Davies told Roadracingworld.com Friday at Laguna Seca. “I wasn’t on the ground for very long, but I came down in the wrong place. I’ve got a hole there [left elbow, which was hastily stitched together by a physician at Mugello], and I’m going to go to the E.R. [Emergency Room] tonight. It’s just getting bigger and redder. I’m not sure if it’s infected or not. It’s pretty tender, as well. And I haven’t felt very well over the last two days, especially on the flight over yesterday.” Asked if his arm was good enough to ride, Davies showed a look of concern then demonstrated a lack of movement at the elbow joint. Still, Davies said the feedback he got from the Ducati Corse personnel, including Marlboro Ducati Team Manager Livio Suppo, at the test was positive. “They were pretty happy,” said Davies. “Livio Suppo, the boss, he seemed pretty happy with it. There seems to be some talk about the role of test rider for next year, and apparently the d’Antin thing [rider selection] is still not done yet. There are people who are close to signing who have not signed yet. So there seems to still be talk about that, a possibility of that.” Davies said he also has opportunities available to him in the AMA paddock.
