Defending Daytona 200 Champion Kyle Wyman was fastest in the first of three Daytona 200 qualifying sessions Friday at Daytona International Speedway.
Riding his N2 Track Days/BobbleHeadMoto/KWR Yamaha YZF-R6 with Dunlop tires, Wyman circulated the 3.51-mile infield road course in 1:49.879 and led the 71-rider field by a significant margin.
Wyman said that except for a problem with his auto-blipper in the opening practice everything was working well for him. The New York native said the track was cleaner than usual this morning but may have gained some bumps thanks to NASCAR racing on the infield road course earlier this year.
M4 Palm Beach Police & Fire Foundation 1-833-CJKNOWS’s Sean Dylan Kelly was officially quickest in the opening practice on his Dunlop-shod, Team Hammer-built Suzuki GSX-R600 but ranked second in Qualifying One with a time of 1:51.221. Kelly said he was focussed more on his race pace more than going for a single fast lap.
Veteran Michael Barnes, age 52, who the 2016 Daytona 200 at age 47, was a tick behind 18-year-old Kelly with a third-fastest 1:51.380 on his Pirelli-shod Squid Hunter Racing Yamaha YZF-R6.
Competitors have two more qualifying sessions on Friday, ahead of the 57-lap 79th Daytona 200 on Saturday afternoon.
